Default 2017 Anniversary Run - Rainbow Falls chosen - now decide WHEN

I'm consolidating thoughts for trail selection in this clean thread.

The Lawsuit forces seasonal road closures in Pike-San Isabel and POLL: Anniversary Run - Date &/or Trail change... have been closed with a final post stating to head to this thread to resolve trail selection.

From post 35 in the Lawsuit thread, comes this list of possible trails. The North and Mid trails, IMO, should be ignored as they would likely be colder and have deeper snow (if you think otherwise, pipe up!). I'm not familiar with the southern trails. Let's distill a southern list of trails down to ten (the max for a poll). We'd start a poll with a list of ten possibilities where everyone could jump in.

As some of the trails are near each other. Where you think one of the trails would be where we'd gather for the picnic / camping - list THAT TRAIL as the trail. If other trails are nearby, list them after the main trail.

    Let's wrap this up

    North
    Bunce School Road / Ironclads
    Johnny Park (closed until June)

    Mid / I-70
    Pickle Gulch
    Yankee Hill
    Barbour Fork
    Devil's Canyon
    Slaughterhouse

South (I think the items below would be "south")
    Metberry Gulch
    Cedar Mt. Road
    Longwater Gulch
    Hackett Gulch
    Prediter ????????????
    Phantom Creek
    mini-moab
    Mt Herman
    Balanced Rock
    Schubarth area
    Rainbow Falls area

Are all the same area off of cedar mtn road. I would say most of what "They" call Predator is only good if you have a dirtbike or ATV.

Camping in that area (for a large group) would have to be at the west end of Cedar Mtn. Rd. Coming in through Divide. There are some pretty big areas to camp there as well as secluded. From there we can access all 3 (4) gulches from Cedar.

That is already a busy trail system and with the gulches being out and back trails, several rigs would surely cause some jams with how tight much of the trails are...from the way I remember them. Missouri Gulch/Mini Moab(Illinois Gulch) has a little more of a trail system (multiple options in and out) and I seem to remember wider trails. There is a close restroom at the north end of Missouri Gulch if I remember, anyone able to confirm?

True, one could actually go from there to Dakan down through Rampart. Cant remember about the restroom. Plenty of camping and large areas as well.

There is a block building /rest room at the entrance of Illinois Gulch ( parking for trucks pulling trailers also) where mini Moab is located, that trail system can be run with snow on it, of coarse there are some tougher sections with a lot of snow that would need chains, but the are plenty of trees of winch size there.

I realize we are still selecting a trail, but do we have a specific day or weekend for the A-run that I can expect. I have been assuming the weekend of March 11-12 as that is pretty close to last years' trip dates. I am really trying to get the CJ up and running for the trip...transmission back in and competed an attempt to better seal up all the leaks. Probably fruitless attempt given the general experiences with D18s. After the rtv dries in a day or so I should be able to fill stuff with fluid and prime the engine and try cranking it...here's to hoping for success for both the jeep and A-run.

Recalling from past dates wouldn't this be on the 11th? Looks like sincere interest is lacking.

It seems Illinois Gulch / Missouri Gulch come to the top of the list.

If someone, who knows the area, would pick THE trail to announce that'd be great. GPS coordinates of where we'd meet for the picnic / camping area would be highly desired.

As for which day - a weekend and soon-ish would be my take.

How about meeting at the Rainbow Falls parking area just off of hwy 67. That has access to Illinois Gulch/mini Moab as well as to a number of other trails in the area like Hidden Valley etc - most would be cruisy and not technical. The parking area allows for trailers and bathrooms and a place to cook and hangout for meals. Camping is probably not an option there - maybe just focus on a day trip? There would be camping options up the trails though.

see of this works for a link to the parking area:
    https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ra....1052999?hl=en

I can't figure out how to drop a pin on the google map just anywhere, but if you scroll on google just a bit to the east northeast about a mile, you will see the quarry and then another 1/4 mile east along the rd will be mini moab obstacle with lots of routes - the quarry is shown on TD map for reference.

    Ahh...here is it is:

seems like the perfect place to meet up. Still have no brakes on my XJ so not looking good for me to make it. Got frustrated and busy so I parked it for last 3 months. Hopefully will be back at it this weekend to try and be ready. Would need to be a Sunday for us to make it.

Just to the left of the parking area are camp spots, and many up the trail. Just have to find one thats not trashed (for those camping). Rainbow falls parking area would be a good spot.

I have been a bit hesitant to jump fully into the A-run as the jeep is not currently running - of course, I could bring the Taco and also ride along with others. I would say that although we have a small group that seem interested, we should set this up for Rainbow falls. Maybe we need to pick a weekend?

I think normally the 3/11-12 weekend would be the 'official' dates, but I might suggest we push it back one more weekend (3/18-19) soley for the purpose of giving me (and maybe Cliff) just a bit more time to get our rigs up and running? Not a big issue if we don't, but the extra week might allow for some to have an extra week to plan and increase attendance?

I know I just said differently, but I'd be happy to keep it on the March 11-12 weekend even if I may not have the old CJ ready. I have a friend in town that weekend with his JK and he said he would love to take the JK out for a run (its stock willy's edition). So...whatever works for you guys is good for me. Not sure how the weather is shaping up, but its supposed to be warm this weekend and into early next week which should minimize snow issues unless a new storm front is due in later in the week.

Also, was thinking that no matter which weekend is chosen, sat could be dedicated to the mini moab and RR trails, and those that want to stay around or join sunday could head towards the gulches which are not that far away. Its a short drive up to westcreek and then access to the Cedar Mt rd.

I'm interested and watching but can't commit 100% so I don't want to be part of the decision process. I bet there's more interest than is evident, once it's posted I bet it fills in quickly.
