Well, that was an interesting night that's for sure! We were out running Mount Baldy with a couple of friends on Tuesday close to midnight checking trail conditions for a friend's upcoming birthday run when a very loud, obnoxious pair of guys come hauling up the trail in a very new Ford Platinum pickup in very deep Snow, honking their horn, hooting and hollering, and just being very ostentatious and rude. After a few donuts and zipping around the Meadows, In an attempt to show off No doubt, they migrated over to the shooting gallery. This made us all uncomfortable and we immediately decided it was time to go as we assumed that they were drunk.
Moments later and at least 50 yards down the trail (a good 120° to the left of the shooting gallery) we hear a zip whomp sound as we realized bullets were whirring past our truck!!! Glancing in the mirror I realized they were in fact actually shooting towards us and no longer facing the targets at the shooting range. Normally very apprehensive in snow I threw caution to the wind and told Chad to Gun it and get the heck out of dodge!! The entire ride back down bully towards the main road was spent wincing and bracing ourselves for the sound of bullets hitting her truck or at the very least seeing their lights in our rearview. Deciding it was best to get the two young kids we were with back off the trail we started to head towards town. While at the look out picking up one of the jeeps Chad noticed lights coming down the trail. Just like the movies, we all jumped into our rigs and check cover not sure whether they would try to fire at us again or not. They sped past us and down the road. We decided moments later to try and get a better description and possibly a license plate and took off down the road as well. However despite Chad's decades of experience in hellacious mountain conditions we were unable to even catch their dust (metaphorical as the road was snow and ice covered).
Unable to maintain a phone signal I texted my best friend and requested she contact authorities which she did they attempted to beat the truck to the trailhead at the Broadmoor but somehow missed them. When we finally reach the bottom there was no sign of them of course and then began the several our debacle of trying to find the proper jurisdiction for that area in order to file the report. The shocking thing is that the bullet casings could not be obtained by law-enforcement because as it turns out they are not equipped to be off road… Imagine our shock and all considering our locale. So the report has been filed but I am not hopeful that anything will come of it Unfortunately!
