    Default Ford Mechanic Needed!!!!

So, after hours and hours spent in the garage, researching, test driving....we are stumped. Two Point Oh has got a rotational whomping sound coming from the front end when in 2wd. The front end has been pulled apart and new parts thrown at it like crazy and no one can think of anything else that would be responsible for the sound when not engaged in 4wd...

At this point, I'd love to take him to someone (preferably not some large commercial shop) who knows these 1st Gen's well and can throw him up on a lift and give him a thorough once over and tell me what all needs to be swapped out and what's worn. I'm going batty with this now. I'm held up on putting a lift on him till I figure out what's up with the front end as well!

So, anyone that knows someone they trust, please let me know! Thanks a million!

No help on the mechanic but I once chased a noise like that on a Buick. Turned out to be the tires... After new CV's, Calipers, bearings.

I'd say rotate the front tires to the rear, rear tires to the front. See if the noise changes..

Front driveshaft pulled? If it still makes the noise, it's the transfer case. If it doesn't, then rule that out.

To be of any real help, knowing what you have checked/replaced would be great.

Do you have manual or the automatic hubs? Im very familiar with the TTB setups.

A common often over looked component that makes a simular noise is the Spindle Need Bearing. Not sure if you've already looked at it or not.

I would start by moving the tires.
As that is the one constant you have.
And based on the last few times we say this thing I would be willing to bet them tires are beat and ready to go away.
As well as being a rotational woohmp woohmp this is a tire sound to me.

We just cheesed a pull on a front end, after having 4 ball jpints, a unit bearing, track bar, as well as 4 TRE, all this and still had a pull.
Turned out to be a tire had lost a core. We couldn't see this tell it was dismounted, and bam there it was right in the middle of the tread a cord split.
All this on the new supper 60 high pinion under the '12 Ram 5500.

I misread Leila's original post. I thought the noise went away when in 4wd.

    Glad you figured it out.

Thanks everyone, I didn't even know she posted this, LOL, but thanks for tossing out some suggestions. although it's not a difficult job, I hate doing any job twice. No clue why a new bearing would've failed so fast, but we're behind on getting things up to par on this rig, mostly because we can still run trails, LOL, so there's still more that needs replaced but it got us out on the trail last night........even if it was only to get shot at.......I'll start a new thread with that story later......

Forgive my ignorance or brain fart but I'm unfamiliar with unit bearing. All wheel bearings, races and seals have been swapped (one of them twice now &#128540

Funny you mention that bc that actually addressed the original whomp....however the new whomp was unaffected lol.

Thanks Tom. Hadn't really thought of doing that. Had previously ruled out hub issues and anything 4wd related but wonder if the spindle bearing could cause noise even without being engaged if there was a lot of funk in there simply from having tires turn....

Heya Chris! Thanks for the diagram btw....very helpful to have on hand when my Lyme brain takes over and I can't remember the difference btwn a bearing and a bushing - crazy I know).

Inner and outer wheel bearings and races, wheel seals and upper and lower Ball joints. Only mention the bj since it can make a rotational noise although quite different from my personal experience.

I have manual hubs up there and have actually wondered if the spindle bearing could pay a role despite not being engaged bc logically to me it would make sense that even though front tired aren't "being turned", the simple fact of having tires turn at all, worn parts could exhibit noise if it's one that pays a part in holding the wheel to the axle. With that said though, I have not yet actually gotten my hands onto either spindle bearing as I understand there is more axle / hub disassembly than I'm comfortable tackling without supervision.

I also know that the spindle locknut on my pass side came loose on trail one night scaring the ever living you know what out of me! Thankfully 96EXXLTinCo (Chad) was there and very creatively and patiently managed to tighten it back up using a flathead and tire iron (no spindle socket in the truck)...and have since wondered if that could be playing a part. I know the O ring in there needs replacing though.

Thanks Brandon!! This is in the works as we speak. I'm working on tracking down some wheel spacers as the new ones are 33s but 2.0 is sitting in the garage due to some other unforeseen lighting and um...visibility issues at the moment anyhow. Lol

Thanks for the suggestion and BIG hi to T!

    "umm whaaat!"

Well, that was an interesting night that's for sure! We were out running Mount Baldy with a couple of friends on Tuesday close to midnight checking trail conditions for a friend's upcoming birthday run when a very loud, obnoxious pair of guys come hauling up the trail in a very new Ford Platinum pickup in very deep Snow, honking their horn, hooting and hollering, and just being very ostentatious and rude. After a few donuts and zipping around the Meadows, In an attempt to show off No doubt, they migrated over to the shooting gallery. This made us all uncomfortable and we immediately decided it was time to go as we assumed that they were drunk.

Moments later and at least 50 yards down the trail (a good 120° to the left of the shooting gallery) we hear a zip whomp sound as we realized bullets were whirring past our truck!!! Glancing in the mirror I realized they were in fact actually shooting towards us and no longer facing the targets at the shooting range. Normally very apprehensive in snow I threw caution to the wind and told Chad to Gun it and get the heck out of dodge!! The entire ride back down bully towards the main road was spent wincing and bracing ourselves for the sound of bullets hitting her truck or at the very least seeing their lights in our rearview. Deciding it was best to get the two young kids we were with back off the trail we started to head towards town. While at the look out picking up one of the jeeps Chad noticed lights coming down the trail. Just like the movies, we all jumped into our rigs and check cover not sure whether they would try to fire at us again or not. They sped past us and down the road. We decided moments later to try and get a better description and possibly a license plate and took off down the road as well. However despite Chad's decades of experience in hellacious mountain conditions we were unable to even catch their dust (metaphorical as the road was snow and ice covered).

Unable to maintain a phone signal I texted my best friend and requested she contact authorities which she did they attempted to beat the truck to the trailhead at the Broadmoor but somehow missed them. When we finally reach the bottom there was no sign of them of course and then began the several our debacle of trying to find the proper jurisdiction for that area in order to file the report. The shocking thing is that the bullet casings could not be obtained by law-enforcement because as it turns out they are not equipped to be off road… Imagine our shock and all considering our locale. So the report has been filed but I am not hopeful that anything will come of it Unfortunately!

Other thoughts re: the noise. These are all just "wonderings" of a curious and stumped mind.

    1. Is it possible for has anyone heard of a situation in which a vehicles alignment could be so out of whack that it caused excess wear on a wheel bearing? I ask because as Chad mentioned one of the wheelbearings had already been replaced, and when I was greasing the new bearing I looked at the old One and noticed that there seem to already be signs of heat on there and discoloration. On that note, can anyone recommend a better grease than the grease with Molly made specifically for Ford?

    2. Is it possible that steering components (tie rods specifically) could result in the same type of noise? I've never heard of tire rods making a whomping noise, but then again stranger things happen in our world all the time. LOL

    Unrelated but also curious:
does anyone know if the first GEN explores have an exhaust weep on them? I have noticed recently that 2.0 has been idling low and/or rough at times, stalling on occasion with CE light on, getting crappy gas mileage and just running poorly compared to his normal pep and go. It seems the CE light comes on more frequently when in 4 going downhill letting the motor do a lot of work. There was also a strange bubbling noise that sounded like a coffee percolator coming from the rear end of the truck one night but haven't heard it since It was suggested by a good friend that a Weep hole (it had one) could be plugged, thus plugging the cat. Considering the numerous hours spent in dirt this could be a very likely possiblility provided it has one. I tried googling to no avail and so then I climbed under there and checked the muffler and pipe and couldn't find one but that's not saying much LOL

Thank you all for your time and thoughts
