    Default carnage from carnage

wrenbot(from co4x4) and i ran carnage today. well andrew ran it and i ran some of it. we made short work of the trail up to the waterfall at the v-notch. andrew was up first and he tried every line that he could get on but eventually took the winch. then it was my turn. i had a line that was trying to work for me but the mud/water at the bottom wasn't helping. tried backing up once and the rocker hung on the lip of the ledge and the rear tire had good traction and ka-tink. busted the drivers side rear shaft. which i didn't know at the time. started winching up and thats when we realized something was wrong in the rear diff. so i backed down and had to go back to the entrance with only front wheel drive while andrew carried on. the shaft flopping around in there also busted up the arb. so i had no rear drive at all. only got hung up once and had to stack a few rocks and eventually winch over a couple rocks about mid ways between the entrance and the notch. once i got back to the trailhead i loaded up and texted andrew and they made it up and since they knew i was out they were going to run chinaman's as well. was a fun day but sucks to break. i have a few more pics that ill try to get up later.

Well that's no Bueno! Glad to hear you made it back under your own power. How do you like the new rig compared to the jeep?

    Bummer.

Was it a high strength axle to start with (or is an upgrade in the future)?

yeah it will definitely show you your weak links thats for sure. i like everything about the buggy more than the jeep. i like the link suspension, the automatic, the stickies, the light weight, the fact that there is really no body to worry about damaging(not that i was really too worried about that with the jeep). it does get a fair bit of body roll that im still getting used to. the air shocks are the cause of that. only real downfalls are being restricted to places that you can trailer it. doesn't have much storage room ( i need to install a cup/bottle holder) exhaust is kinda loud but i'm getting used to it.

    and there's the sign, trailgear!
    Then guys steal everyone's stuff.
I bet the real deal wouldn't have let got and cost you an ARB as well.

Alex it good to hear you are liking this thing.
It won't take you long to figure out the issues and fix them.
    Hope there is not many.

yeah i'm not a trail gear fan either. the previous owner had a tg rear shaft take out the arb once before as well. i'm gonna hi-jack a stock shaft from aaron and put a spool in the rear and i'll be back going.

Trailgear has been known for stealing other manufactures stuff.
They built it in China with inferior quality and inferior materials.
Just to save a few bucks....

I ran stock shafts in my Sami (toyota axles) on 37" maxxius creepy cwrals and it was welded/spoiled.
Never busted a shaft the front was a different story.
The longfield stuff was the way to go.
I even considered changing to FJ80 axles at one point.

Ouch...sucks that it took out the ARB.

I just recently put 4340 Yukons in my 14 Bolt just for more piece of mind, and since I don't want to lose my Detroit.

The waterfall up to the V-Notch has become no joke.

Myself and one other ran it weekend before last, and try as I might the waterfall denied me in my buggy as well.

Seems like the only way to get up the waterfall these days is catch it dry, or have a looooong wheelbase.

Unfortunately yukon doesn't make shafts for the 79-85 toyota axle. Only choices are synergy, alloy usa, g2 and trail gear. For now I'm just gonna run a stock shaft. At least if it breaks it will hopefully be a clean break and not take out the spool with it.

Call Bill at Bill's Englewood Driveshaft, he can make whatever you want. He's good and has a lot of satisfied customers on the forum.

tonkatoy is his username here but he's not on often.

He is trying to replace a rear axle not a driveshaft. But thank you for trying to support local vendors!

Oops, not all shafts are driveshafts.

That's what I get for not reading closely.

Alex you can take the stock shafts over to Roadrunner fabrication, they have a place that will chrio great just about anything....that will step the factory stuff up in strength quite a bit.

I'm not going to go thru the trouble with stock shafts. I'll just run it til it breaks and swap in another. Picked up 2 stock shafts last night. So should have it back ready to go this evening.
