    Default 22re timing

    Doing a timing chain 86 4runner 22re.
And its not running very well after getting,it back together.

I have done my fair share of timing belts, chains, of various engines and completely lost with this.

Light color chain were struggling the dipple marks, cam at 12 o'clock, crank at 6.

Distributor was pre-marked, distributor to cyl head/ cap to DIS, and rotor mental note was about 11:30 pointing to # spark plug wire. I have tried going another 180 deg, setting rotor before and after TDC and before and after 180 deg

I have not check compression yet i will soon

I do know im setting everything to compression stroke at TDC.

Right now it runs as if it has multiple misfires.
Give it gas it it runs better but has a knocking/tapping noise,
Im allmost thinking it might have bent a few valves!
Drivers side guide was Only half way there rest was in the oil pan, cover was very very close to breaking through water.
Guide was replaced with metal backed guide, and good used cover.......

Done all i know....im now lost

Did you remove the head or do the procedure with the head in place?

I have done a few timing chains on the 22re models. I always do them with the head on. As long as the chain hadn't worn through the front cover, I never had a problem, even if the guides were all in pieces. At least once I had to help someone set the ignition timing after doing a chain. I would make 100% sure that the ignition timing is right. You should also be able to pull the valve cover and make sure that at TDC on the crank that the cam lobes for cylinder 1 are set for the valves to close. Just some thoughts... I would doubt that you bent any valves.

Another idea is to put a timing light on it to see if the ignition timing is close. That will help narrow things down.

Thanks jeff, ill pull the cover after a compression test.
My gauge is at my friends house 😱
Ill try the light in a little bit, but i have a pretty good felling im spot on TDC, and like i said, i positioned the Rotor before and after TDC.

I have done about 15 Subaru T belts, SOHC, DOHC, modern Fords v8 with DOHC, assortment of 4 bangers, and a few 22re's.
Thats why im scratching my head on this one.....yhis one to me is allmost to easy lol

Pulled the valave cover, Crank is at TDC, cam is at TDC
, dis rotor is pointing to #1 cyl.
What im noticing is there seems to be an excessive amount of blow by during hand cranking.

Was the engine running before you did the timing chain? I am curious if something changed or if it had issues before.

Set all valves at .008 clearance. Compression went up on all Cylinders.
Still did not start! Called a buddy over to help me crank the engine whike i tinkered around started but ran like crap.
Off a whim we swapped his running 22re pick up Dis Rotor and bam it starts. The dam, rotors clip was worn out and the contact point on the rotor has 1/16. Or so of play back and forth...... Got a new cap and rotor starts as it should
Motor sounds fine now, still need to adjust the valves at Operating temp and hofully i can button this up.

It was running REALLY rough. Out of fear it was going to bust the chain or cover, i didnt rum it more then 30 seconds in my possession

Gotcha. That all makes more sense now. At first I thought it was running like a top until you did the timing chain. Glad that it was an easy fix! It sounded like ignition timing, but glad that you had it right all along!

One trick that I have learned over the years is to use a timing light to check for spark when working alone. I clip the light onto each spark plug wire and turn the engine over while holding the light in my hand. I can then trigger it to see if I am at least getting a spark. It is also helpful to use a remote starter when working alone. You can turn the engine over while being under the hood and checking for spark on each wire.

I need to get my self a remote start now that i have my own garage!
I use a spark checker to check spark, more for the reason i want to know that i have spark resistance through spark for ignition.

At least with the metal guides (and hopefully all new related parts) you won't ever have to worry about it again!
