My Grand Cherokee came with 20" wheels. I think they are a liability even for mild off roading so will change to 18", but am considering keeping the 20" wheels to use for winter tires. Is there any reason not to?

None I know of. The only reason I know of not to use them offroad is the small sidewall limits flex, which actually might be a positive for winter driving.![]()

Paul is spot on. For winter road driving the smaller sidewall is fine. For wheeling I would get the smallest diameter wheel that will fit (I doubt you can fit a 15" wheel over your brakes, but probably a 17" would work).
