    Default Scout 80

I have allways wanted a Scout but never got past the price tag on most of them, and didnt even realize there are other model's other then the scout ll

Anyways i have a chance to get my hands on a scout 80
4 cyl 4 speed for 2k it looks like it has low rust and it came from New Mexico, was told it drives fine but needs little fixes.
I know nothing about the 4 cyl im sure the axles are pretty tiny.

In a scout im more after the look and not the 4x4 capability so i dont think i would want to chage a whole lot, small lift and 33's and cruze with to top off.

So do you think 2 k is asking to high for a scout 80?

Scout 80s had dana 27s and 30s. but later scouts had 30s & 44s, so just check. good possibility they were swapped at some point because a lot of the scout guys do that & it's an easy swap.

I bet i can ! Is that a good fair price for a Scout 80? If it was a scout ll in the same condition i would do it !

Thanks for the link! Can a D27 hold up to 33s? With the 4 cyl?

I really don't plan on doing any wheeling with it, maybe dirt service roads at most.

I had a '65 briefly I partially restored and flipped a few years ago, so I never got any real world use out of it. It seems to me that a lot of the Scout 80/800 guys yank the axles and throw Scout II axles or something similar in them. IMO, a D27 would be on the light side for 33's ordinarily, but with a 4 banger and service road use only they might survive.

I'd recommend you really, really inspect for rust. Scouts are notorious for rusting out long before the frame/drivetrain give up the ghost. Otherwise you'll face similar issues found across other makes of the same vintage.

Sorry, I forgot to add I'm a little out of touch on Scout prices. Check the classifieds on that link I posted. I bought my Scout II from the original owner with 88K for $2,000 in 1993. I bought the '65 in 2007 for $1000 and sold it for $1500. However it had a GM 305 in it and was rusted to beat hell.

I run the OEM D27 (closed knuckle) on the front of of my 1970 CJ5 with 33s and the 225V6. No problems, but wouldn't put any serious traction devices in it. Keeping it open keeps the risk of breaking much lower. Of course, I am not sure the weight of the scout 80, where the CJ5 is under 3000lbs. I would think the 4cyl and 33s would not be a problem for the D27. Might want to check the brake size as well - D27s on CJs came with either 9 or 10inch brakes (option with V6). The 9" brakes are scary, the 10inch just barely passes muster on the light CJ5 with 33s. 11 inch was not available on CJs until the open knuckle D30 came around. Also, closed knuckle D27 do not have a good turning radius - its sad how wide of a turning radius I need with an 81" wheelbase. Open knuckle D30 is much better! That being said, I like my D27. I wouldn't choose it for a build - but no reason to change it. Again, this is all based on 70CJ5 experience - Scout drivers might give more specific feedback.

I picked up a mid 60s scout for free out of Illinois that looked great in pictures, but the underside of the body was completely rusted out. Like, barely even existed it all. I sold it in that exact same condition for $1100, just as a price point reference. Definitely inspect the body mounts and all underneath for rust. I bought my 75 scout II for $800, but that was about 7 years ago, and I was watching for a long time for something cheap. If I were to sell it now I would ask more in the 6k - 8k range, but I have done a TON to it. The 80/800s would be great for playing around on dirt roads, but IMO if you were to want to actually wheel it to any degree it would be under powered, and the axles are too weak.

The Scout 80 model is going to be slow with the 4 cylinder. It should have a 3 speed manual too. To turn 33's you will likely need axles/gearing. Also lifts to clear 33's won't be cheap if you try to buy a kit.

Price-wise, if the body is any sort of reasonable shape, $1,000-$2,000 is probably a good deal. I have been keeping my eye out for an 80 without a lot of rust. They are hard to find not rusted or beat to hell.

Agree with others - the D27 with 33s is much less the concern than whether you will enjoy driving a 4cyl with 33s. I don't know gearing options for Scouts, or what 4 cyl engines they ran, but similar vintage CJs with 4cyl ran 5.38s the f-head hurricane 134ci. For dirt road cruising at 35mph, its fine, but tops out at 55mph or so - its actually as much about engine power as gearing. You can drop the gears to 4.88s and not get any better top speed as the engine can't turn the gears (and wind resistance with square shaped jeeps). Also remember the brakes aren't all that good at stopping these things either in modern traffic.

Guess it really as much about your expectations and wants - I love driving and wheeling old stuff. Its quirky and a bit sketchy in modern traffic at highway speeds - and people will honk and hate you for being slow. But cruising on the open road at a comfortable speed is awesome, and wheeling the old iron is really fun.

ill tell you what, i really really miss my 57 willys pick up!
I cruzed that around for about a year at age 22 and freakn loved it! Breaking did suck, imsure if i had it now i would have swaped other axles in, for th gearing and breaking.

Dang it now i want a Willys now !!! Lol

Ill look in to it but ill ask here first, are jeep axles an easy swap? Dana 30 front and 35 rear? Seems to be a easy cheep and available swap.
I dont know with of the scout 80 im sure its not as wide.
Maybe even a 8.8 can be an easy swap

I would bet the Scout Dana 44 axles are the easiest swap. It isn't a bolt in job, but here is some great info. D&C is in Co Springs and are great Scout guys.

I think you have to relocate the perches on the axle. If you find an early Scout II, they are drum brakes, so no brake changes would be needed. The 74 and later are disc brakes, which are much easier to find. Will need a new master cylinder of course to match.

If you are patient, you can find a matched set of 44 axles from a Scout II for about $200. They don't have a ton of value anymore. I sold my mostly complete front axle about 5 years ago for $100. The rear axle went to the scrapper.

If you sourced some Scout II axles and went SOA, that's perfect for fitting 33's.

Do you have to run cross-over steering when running SOA? My SII is on 33's, but has a 2" Rancho lift and a 2" body lift so it is still spring under.
