    Default DIY mechanics Bay rentals??

Hi everyone! Question for you folks. Back in Texas we had a few shops where you could rent a mechanics bay with tools and optional lift for different periods of time so you can do your own work. So I was wondering if any of you knew of anything similar here in CO. Contemplating some work and am thinking I'll need shop space where it can be accessible and worked on for a week. Not needing access to fancy diagnostic equipment etc.

If any of you know of shops like this or have any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it!! THANKS!!!

That place is on 72nd just 1/2 block West of Federal. Looks like a great place from the outside. Plenty of bay doors and such. It seems like I always drive by when it is closed, so I have never been able to stop inside and check it out.

I've used the DIY garage for a few things like oil changes, cv axle, and brakes. It's a great place to do work if you're like me and live in a place that has no garage, driveway, or room to work on the street. They have tool cabinets for each bay with a good amount of basic tools, usually enough to get the job done if what you're doing is not too intense.

On occasion, you may have to raid other tool cabinets or ask the mechanic on duty. I needed a pickle fork and a 22mm socket at one point that were not readily provided within the tool cabinet.

But they have lifts, air, and electrical at every bay. They provide a small number of air tools, but the impact wrench comes in pretty handy. The lift can only be operated by employees, so it's a little bit inconvenient when you have to track them down to move the lift. They also provide fluid disposal, which is great too.

You've probably seen on their website that they have 3 tiers of prices, and the cheapest is you doing all the work yourself. You sign up for a certain number of hours, and they only charge you for what you use.

I'd recommend it if what you're doing is not incredibly in-depth and you just don't have the space to do it at home.

It's actually for me Adam, I'm kind of at a crossroads with this explorer. It's time to rebuild the motor/tranny, swap em out for new, or find another explorer and swap my current parts over. I dont have anywhere to do a rebuild or swap inside if/when I come up with some money for either. I'd like to keep this explorer givin my history with it and what it represents to me, but the timing chain is making some noise and needs guides/tensioners, got a little knock in the lower end, and the tranny doesn't like shifting much anymore. I know a DIY isnt the place for this kind of overhaul. And I have a little time to figure it out since I dont have money to make a move on either option yet anyway.

I was/am in the same position. I had a car that had been through a lot with me, but since it was 26 years old, it was about the time when everything pretty much needed to be fixed, and it all kept failing right after something got fixed. I live in a super dense part of Denver and don't have anywhere to do work myself, so I paid a shop to do the work. They are reputable, but man are they expensive.

I finally had to just cut my losses, no matter how much I wanted to keep the car. Ended up selling it. I had a pretty big laundry list of things that needed done, so it was very similar to your situation. It might just be easier and less of a headache to just sell it.

Not having your own garage is a huge pain.

Not trying to hijack the thread, I am needing to do an intake manifold swap. My plenum gasket is failing. I have a boneyard intake I'm cleaning up while waiting on parts to arrive. I have the mechanical ability and the tools, I just don't have a place to do it.

Chad/Leila, I stumbled onto this place that belongs to a rally racer crowd.

For the places that have tools, how are they presented / made available to the hourly renters? How does the shop keep tools from being stolen?

Based on the website, the one off Federal has basic hand tools available and specialty tools must be checked out individually. They undoubtedly have cameras in every bay as there is a tv in every bay. But someone did state that they had to raid another cabinet for a socket, so...

They have bays, and small drywalled 'rooms' directly off the bays with a seat, a table, a rolling cart, a tv, vehicle fluid containers, and a big tool chest. The tools are separated into draws by what they do: screwdrivers in one, pliers/channel locks/etc in another, sockets in yet another, and so on. Within each draw, things are also separated into standard and metric.

There's usually a front desk person working, as well as one or more mechanic on duty, so there's a tad bit of oversight. To be honest, I've pretty much been the only person there every time I've went (I try to go as early as possible, though), and the mechanics haven't really paid attention to me too much. They definitely don't do inventory or look through the vehicle after you're done. My assumption then is that they just trust that no one's stealing anything.

I will also say that there are 3 ways of working on your vehicle. The first is by yourself, but the second one is working alongside a mechanic, so they have the ability to keep an eye out for stealing. The third is just to have the shop do it by themselves, of course.

Yes, you do have to buy the bay at Man Caves and they are not cheap. I looking into it a few years ago and almost lost my lunch. If I remember right it is kind of like a storage place, but you buy the bay to do with as you please.
