Exactly my thoughts although I've never actually run them (for that reason).

Tim - my thoughts as well. I had them on an AWD Grand Cherokee for one winter in Montana - they were replaced before the next winter. Good mileage, low noise, good ride etc, but I slipped around on snow much worse than with any AT tire I've ever run. Granted, MTs don't do that great either on snow so might be about the same. See how they work, and if not what you want, then its pretty easy to trade them out for some dedicated snow tires in winter. Some stores like discount will give you some trade-in credit towards the new tire purchase if the tires are in good shape.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking...I got them for such a steal, with only about 2k miles on them, plus rims for $500, so I figured I would see how they do in the snow with a little siping. Mostly I just don't want to wear down the MTs for just winter road driving. The sra was very nice on the road for the 1000k miles back from my parents in California though. Didn't know discount would give credit for low mileage tires...thanks for the info.

My experience is there are compromises in any set of tires (never found any that are particularly good in every situation). Unless there is a blizzard, I don't really drive my Jeep in the snow anymore, but when I did, I swapped out to a set of snow tires in winter (smaller tires made for snow/ice).

I still have the snow tires in the garage but only put them on for emission testing day.
BTW - Colorado emmission testing is total BS!!! I encourage everyone to write their state representative and tell them so...(rant off).

I have run just about all the majot manufacturers tires.
The BFG is ok all around be it the new stuff or the older stuff.
The goodyear have had good luck with. Seams the dura tracks are a good tire.
The swampers I had were hea'y and stiff. They were on a light truck a sami so with a 35x14.5xr15 we could take the valve core out and wheel on them...never did loose a bead!
We have been running maxxis tire for 5-6 years now. I have a set of buckhorns 33x12.5r15 that are about 40k miles right now. They do well in most aplications. Good stoppi g in the snow for my standards but I dont drive like the things a racecar.
I also have a set of 37x12.5r16 creapy crwalers these were run on the sami as well.
7 psi was the happy place for these thing under the light rig.
We will see how they do under the jeep with full width axles.
They are at about 60% tread left so I will have to shop around again before to long.

while agree that most cars on the roads today are new clean and the need for emissions testing is overdone:

That's the size I'm going to put on our Xterra, Hankook Dynapro ATMs, as soon as the ones that it came with (265/70/16 BFG Long Trail) wear out. They can fit with no lift, but you need a hairdryer: http://www.xterranation.org/showthre...res-on-2nd-Gen

I run Falken ATs, and from my experience, you're exactly right. They're fine all-around, but they're miserable in snow. And by that, I mean that they're okay on the road, but off road with any steep incline, you'll be spinning your wheels.

Check out these worn Falken Wildpeaks

    HERE

Overland Journal did a tire test recently and the tires performed well. But those were new tires.

the new Wildpeaks look a little more promising:

I love my Toyo MT's. They have treated me great in all weather. The second day I had them we had an hour long down pour that turned the location into a giant mud pit. Went along just fine in 2wd and never got stuck. Anytime I have gotten stuck in 2wd I just had to put it in 4wd and it climbs right out. They did unbelievably well last winter. Pulling a 10k gooseneck and camper through a blizzard and muddy locations. More than likely going to buy again.

"When it came time to replace the Duratracs, I started an experiment with the TreadWright Guard Dog M/T (same size; 315/70/17). I got them with the "buy 4, get the 5th free" sale and bought 5 shipped to my door for ~$746. That's half what the Duratracs would have been. I then paid $100 to have them mounted and balanced at Big O.

On-road, these are not comparable to the Duratracs. Louder, worse in the rain, worse in the snow. Probably normal for an M/T. I have no other experience. Off-road, I have no complaints.

I got the K-edge grip (ground up glass and walnut shells in the rubber for winter traction) and didn't notice anything at first. However, now that I've got some miles on them I can see the pinholes in the tread blocks. Anxious to see how that effects winter performance this year."

I had almost forgotten about the GuardDogs, please report back on how effective the K-edge is! Those tires are copies of the military Hummer MT/R, minus the run flats and kevlar. The guys that make royalties off of that specific model own the place that I used to get my tires from. It's called TrailworthyFab in Wichita, Kansas. They make custom beadlocks as their main product.

When I tried to order those a year ago they were on backorder and went with Kelly Safari TSR. This tire is made by GoodYear. The sidewall is the exact same as the Duratracs with different lettering and a lower price tag. The Kelly's do well in the mud and for daily street driving, low road noise compared to Hummer tires. No problems on wet roads. Does fine in the snow. Just waiting to see how fast/slow they wear.

    Re Treadwright Guard dogs

Mine started dry rotting after two years. This on the new recap rubber. Google Treadwright dry rot. Seems to be a common problem.

I won't be buying treadwrights again.

Finally the first real snow storm of the year...was able to see the capability of the SR-A in the snow...honestly, it performed well. Went all the way up to Copper Mountain for a day of skiing. Mixed snow/ice, hard pack, slush, and fresh. I had literally zero issues...so, for now, I am happy with them..

yeah! first real snow and my KO2s performed great as well! we got about 4-5" in our driveway and I usually drive up and down a few times to clear a path. we have a fairly steep drive with 2 turns/curves in it. last year I never made it up w/out 4wd because of my tires. yesterday I made it up and down just fine w/2wd.

kept the Jeep in 4wd for the drive down to work and I never slipped once or lost traction. all in all, I'm very happy with these. now the real test will be to see how long they last and how they perform as they wear down.

Exactly. When I ran the Goodyear Duratracs, they were unstoppable in the snow for the first two years. After that (and 30k miles), they were so so.

So I am having to buy tiresvagain as well.
I so didnt want to do this as will be yanking axles and going to 37's.
But my 33x12.5 maxxis bighors are about as worn as I will wheel on.
I am at 1/4" tread left so time to replace these tires.
I am dissapointed in the milage out of these as well.
want on at 99,470 and I an at 114,320 righg now.
I am how ever very pleased with how these workdd for my jeep.
I know they would not last super long as I am not new to the maxxis brand.
Thes tire got abused often, we wheeled at least every other weekend at 15psi in very different conditions.
Many of you have seen me burn them trying to get up something.

So I am going to mount up a set of 33x12.50 mastercraft cuorser mxt
At $52 a tire less I am a little better adout this expence.
