Default FS: 1998 Land Rover Discovery LSE 4.6

For sale is my 1998 Land Rover Discovery LSE, purchased October 2013.

    Located in Golden, CO

This is the 50th anniversary of Land Rover edition.
    Mileage: 175,765
    Color: White gold pearl metallic
Engine: 4.6 litre out of a Discovery II with pinned cylinder liners
    Transmission: Automatic
Suspension: Terra Firma big bore expedition 2" lift
    Tires: Goodyear wrangler duratrac
Full time all wheel drive with 4wd and center differential lock
Dual battery system with separate fuse block for accessories
2 12v outlets added to rear cargo area
    Extended stainless steel brake lines

I am a Land Rover tech and have taken very good care of this vehicle. It started out with the factory supplied 4.0 which the previous owner blew up. I took the opportunity to upgrade the engine. It is a known failure of the discovery II 4.6 engine that the cylinder liners can knock, and the engine I received was known to have this problem so I mitigated this with the pinning procedure. I have driven this vehicle all over Colorado, Moab Utah, Grand Canyon Arizona and Grand staircase Utah without any incident. The acceleration is amazing compared to a regular 4.0. Litre. This is not meant to be a grocery getter, it is built for adventure and if you know Land Rover it does not disappoint. I performed all the work to make it reliable for overlanding or as a solid off-road rig. The real value is in the services performed, suspension and tires.

    Services performed:
Installed 4.6l engine with pinned cylinder liners
Engine fully resealed, this includes the rear main
    New oil pump
    New water pump
    New thermostat
    Reconditioned heads
Front and rear diff fluids replaced with redline shockproof.
    Center diff has fresh 80w
    Coolant flushed
    Power steering fluid flushed
    New power steering supply hose
    Oil changed 2k miles ago
    Lower radiator hose replaced
    New air filter
    Viscous fan clutch replaced
    New spark plugs and wires
    New serpentine belt
    New fuel pump
    New fuel filter
    Replaced the windshield last summer
Repacked all 4 sets of wheel bearings in March
    New motor mounts
    Resoldered rear window control module

    Known issues:
-Cylinder liner pins seep oil. Very minor, just clean them off at every oil change.
-Thrust angle slightly off, still within spec. Despite 2 alignments. Just means it will torque steer slightly on take off. After installing the engine I broke a new mount on the drivers side. Have installed a limiting strap to keep this from happening again and of course replaced the broken mount.
-Rear sway bar removed for better articulation. This allows the rear springs to come out of the rear upper perches. I have a set of spring dislocation cones I will include with the sale.

    Asking $6500 obo

Nice! I really like that rig (for a LR). Like it even more than your 95 overlanding rig - still planning to sell that one? Couldn't tell if you posted them both for sale just see which one would sell and then keep the other one or if you are truly selling both. I know you acquired a 3rd one somewhat recently as well.

Thanks! Now I need to buy the replacement and start building up our D2.
Replacement overland rig will be a LR3 and the D2 will be the new off-roader.
Its been hard selling both but we needed a more modern over lander for our future plans.

Congratulations! I hope you got good $$ for both, they were great rigs that you don't see in that condition often, the new owners are off to a great start. You should flip LRs, you are uniquely qualified for it.

Do you have an LR3 lined up yet?

I am keeping in touch with both new owners.
I have my eye on one in Texas. If it doesn't work out possibly one in Santa Fe. All the ones here want too much for them.

I am sure that you will find the one you want.

One thing that I have learned, you can often find deals between Thanksgiving and Christmas. People who are thinking of selling something may find they are short on holiday cash, and that makes a sale more urgent. That might be a little bit different with a 4wd during the Winter, but still it might pay off. The same thing happens just before tax day. I have gotten some of my best deals April leading up to tax day. The seller is usually very happy to get out of a tight situation with the IRS.
