Do you have a place or time frame in mind? I've been meaning to get out near Salida/Buena Vista all summer, but I never made it. I'd be up for a weekend trip.

One question though: how cold do the nights get in the mountains here?

Good question, I look forward to the answers. What helped me a lot after moving here was knowing that the temperature in the mountains drop 3.5 degrees per 1,000' of elevation.

We want to camp Sat night & never been to grand lake. But my camping spot needs to be at our jeep because the tents will go off of the jeep.

In August, I camped by Breckenridge and Empire on two separate weekends. It got down into the low-40s. You're probably looking at low-40s, high-30s now. Perfect sleeping weather, IMO.

You need to check out the MVUM for the forest ranger district where you want to go. In the key on the side it'll list where you can camp dispersed.

    On this Map: http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_...rdb5165771.pdf

it says all of the forest service roads that are dispersed camping allowed With your jeep within 300ft off of the service road

Trail damage says pickle gulch uses 707.1-713.1-714.1F-716.1-717.1 & 718.1

All of these roads, as well as all of the other roads around this area was listed in the dispersed camping Rules. So is it safe to assume I can camp anywhere I want while i'm out there as long as i don't take the jeep+campsite more than 300ft from the service road?

    Correct.

All the forest service rules are typically the same- but it's always wise to check first and know the rules before you go. If you get stopped by a ranger, you can at least have a competent discussion with him as to why you are where you are.

I find these Fs rules weird. its ok to drive off trail up to 300ft to go camping, but it is not ok to drive off trail 5ft to avoid an obstacle.
Im a firm believer in stay the trail and all. i just don't understand the rules sometimes

When on the trail & at a campsite, is it ok to Pan gold or dig a little in the older runoff's? How about panning in a stream?

for what it's worth, I live at 9200ft and we've been in the upper 40s, low 50s, at night. it's getting more and more windy, though. shut the windows last night because of the wind.

There's a whole lot more trucks on the trail and if they all drove 5 feet off the trail the trail itself would end up 5 feet wider.

We camped out at Geneva Creek this weekend at about 10,500ft. It dropped down to the 40's by 9pm and by 3am it was in the 30's. From what I've heard and read it's just going to get colder as the weeks go by. If you're camping - you can always sleep in your vehicle or an RV, but without a 3/4 season tent, I'd caution against tent camping unless you're tolerant to the cold. Even with a standard air mattress and several thick blankets, it got pretty chilly. With a double air mattress you'd probably be ok with a 15 degree sleeping bag. We'd planned on sleeping in the 4Runner but ended up finding a site we preferred that wasn't accessible. However, 96Exp slept in his Explorer and was toasty...
