Do people still use c.b. Radios while 4wheeling or do they use cell phones?

CB's since they don't need the cell signal that is lost so often in the mountains.

Channel choice is decided by the person putting the run together. "We" have no formal / mandatory channel though channel 4 is our most commonly used channel.

Thanks for all the help,I think about the only thing I don't have is a strap for towing and a air supply.

Make sure you get a snatch strap and not a tow strap.

Make sure you have good tow points front and back to attach a tow strap to as well.

    Yep!

One of my first times out, before I had any recovery points on the jeep, I needed a tug to get up a ledge at Moody Hill. Chris (havn't seen him around here for a bit) had a winch line in his hand and looks at my front end - "You have no place for me to hook up!" - LOL. I don't know where he ended up connecting but I was able to be pulled up.

Radio Service Center off of Sheridan can get you squared away with anything you need for your CB. Even sells used/tuned ones. Very smart guy.

I have CB but recently passed my HAM technician license test. Waiting for my call sign.
Plan on having both on board.

CB, FRS, or HAM depending on the group. With FrontRange4x4 run, I use the CB. With a few buddies, they have FRS only. I'm a little interested in HAM, but mostly for the capability to patch through to a telephone in a time of need.

You can also do APRS with ham mapping your location and allowing people in range of a phone to see your position.

I use both CB and cell phone. CB for on-trail communication, and cell phone for navigation of the trails. I use apps like BackCountry Navigator (Android) or Motion-X GPS (iOS/Android), which allow you to use the .gpx or .kml trail files from TrailDamage. You can cache (pre-save) your map tiles so you always have a point of reference and are not dependent on cell signal for Navigation.

CB and cell phone here too. I've been surprised by how often I have a signal, and for talking to the group on a regular trail run the CB is fine.
