In a never ending search for the proper mix of dirt & rock !
For sure lift it, it will make you more capable / make trails easier and more fun. There are a lot of good short lifts for TJs, Frank at seriousoffroad.com has good deals, he's a member here. I have been running the Rough Country 2.5" spring kit- 4 coils, 4 shocks, some brackets and hardware- for about 4 years, all over Colorado and Utah, and I love it. I also have a 1" body lift and 1.5" wheel spacers, and 33x12.50 duratracs on the stock wheels. Sway bar disconnects and extended bumpstops too. Skids on the engine / steering / radiator / differentials. Truetracs. Tops, doors... it's a long, dark, expensive path you're starting down...
TJs are 4 coils, XJs are front coils rear leafs
Yes lift it. You won't stop with bigger tires though, trust me. It's an addiction.
Auto or stick?
Anything over 31s and you're soon going to want gears and at least one locker, then to go a step bigger.
With a 2" lift keep the stock arms until you beat the crap out of them. Don't be tempted to replace them with the crap arms that are available with bushings on both ends, they'll eat your mounts. Save up for arms with a flex joint, or better yet long arms. You'll want them soon enough so start saving now
And instal it yourself. It's easy and you learn a lot about your jeep. There's plenty of people here who will help if you run into trouble.
