XJ not running right

so the other day my XJ was runny pretty bad nearly stalling out when pressing on the gas and idle then the check engine came on so I shut it down but then couldn't get it to restart after that. So we towed it home I got to reading on some other forums and was told by what I read it could be the idle air control valve so I replace it today an well the truck fired right up idled smoothly. So I put it in drive and tried to take it around the block but only got 20ft from where it was parked then it started to kick then nearly stalling then check engine light came back on again and hardly running again and not able to shift up at all so if any one got any ideers on what it could be that would be great

Turn the key forward to the on position (not start), back to off, back to on, back to off and finally on and leave it on. Count the light flashes of check engine light. Here is a good write up.

You got to know what the check engine is telling you first. Will likely be able to get more help after that.

Also check fuel pressure with key on engine off and key on engine running, if your able to check while driving. Like cliff said read codes first then let us know what pops up

my bet would be crank position sensor.

so this is the sequence that I got 1 2 2 4 2 3 -55 the 55 is the ending code

yeah i took it over to my buddies shop and he ran the computer and come to find out it the TPS was bad so we replaced it and it runs great all over again
