Default North sand Hills/green ridge trail 8/15-8/17

This was with my overlanding group. Thought I would share in case anyone is interested in this trip in the future.

    North Sand Hills 8/15-8/17

We started out with a 3 hour trek to Walden. Just north of Walden is the north sand hills where we met up with Morris who headed up Thursday evening. After a quick meet up and Tim dropping the trailer we quickly headed up to the Sand.

This hill proved to be tougher than we expected.

We had a blast jetting around the sand. One of the only places in Colorado you can drive on sand.

    Quite a stunning view.

After a couple hours playing we headed back to camp to set up for the night.

Morris is not in our sand pictures as he played around before we got there.

Saturday morning we got up and headed out the back way via FS road 46. The plan was to head up to old roach a ghost town however we missed a vital turn to make it there and ended up on FS road 46B instead and eventually on FS road 203. Turned out to be a great trip through the woods with a wide expanse when coming out of the woods.

A quick stop at little hohnholz lake for some lunch and to research the afternoon route we decided on FS road 173 south off FS road 86.

After lunch we headed down 103 a level dirt road to FS road 80c and after a short drive turned south on FS road 86 also known as Deadman road. Before we headed south we noticed a sign for a historic fire watch tower so we decided to check it out. Its official name is Deadman Tower.

A couple brave souls hiked up to the top. Leon and Brolyn(sp?) Tim and Colleen's daughter took some amazing pics to share.

Saw this little critter at the base of the tower.

We had a little fun in a mud puddle on the way back down from the tower.

This would not be the last time we see water. Especially muddy water as this is where it starts to get interesting.
A We head down FS 173 and it goes pretty smooth for quite a ways. Couple puddles. Occasional rocky bit. The plan was to get to FS road 318 and cut across to 517D and head down to 517 and get back to the main route south FS road 177. As we kept getting deeper and deeper so did the water crossings and mud puddles. The obstacles started getting harder and harder as well.

    Little harder, little deeper

We were told by a couple ATV folks this was the deepest crossing we would see. I would agree.

After several more crossings we decided to call it a evening.

We awoke Sunday to this evil squirrel going vehicle to vehicle awaking each of us. Little guy really loved Leon's rig.

    Onto more of this:

Even if we took a picture of every obstacle and water crossing it would not do it justice. This felt like real camel trophy kind of adventuring.

    Some dilapidated fixer uppers.

Finally came up to a clearing:

After this we came across a complete washed out section. Had to do some trail building to get everyone around safely. I don't have images of that so hopefully someone else does.

    Wash out:

A short distance after that with several more muddy crossings we made it out.

Awesome pics. I've only been up that way once. Never got to play in the sand.
