"Yep, the misfire will kill the cat. But that's a result, not a cause, of the failure.

And the misfire will allow unburned fuel into the exhaust, which is your HC failure.

And the additional oxygen leftover from the lack of combustion will trick the PCM into driving the other cylinders rich, causing elevated CO.

Now, dynamic compression tests can ID the weaker cylinder. But it just compares contribution against the other cylinders. A true compression test can tell much more. We don't know how weak the other cylinders are. I'd still suggest a compression test. Then, since the plugs will be out already, the next step should be a cylinder leak down test. That can help identify the cause of the low compression."

"If you wish to bring it up to me for a simple look, I'm game. I have screw in and push/hold in compression meters.

As it seems the compression, from the note, is ?variable?, I would lean towards a sticking valve. If it was due to a hole in the piston, it'd be constant (or so I'd think).

4cyl motor (re-read post 1) so #3 "should be" fairly simple to get to. Removing the valve cover "should be"??? easy to remove to inspect valve operation?

Holler if you wish to drive up."

These two posts have some wonderful info in them. And as others have stated before, that motor has a problem with burning up valves. I would be willing to bet one of your valves on the number 3 cylinder is burned up. And that in turn took out your cat.

I also wanted to point out that the emissions rules only applies to vehicles bought and sold here in Colorado. And if I am remembering the CL ad for the truck correctly, it was being advertized in WY. It might have been a different truck as I look at 100's each day, but I thought that one was in Cheyenne so the emissions rule wouldn't apply.

*EDIT-Nope, different truck than the one I was thinking of in WY

This truck is from the outskirts of Aurora.
I did, the weekend prior, drive to CO springs to look at a V6 97? single cab Tacoma with a snorkel, which I liked but didn't want to pay full price for. Now I wish I had.

Then I drove to Cheyenne, to check out a Frankenstein looking single cab Tacoma that's underside coated with a thick layer mud, and a thin layer inside the cab including the headliner. It was pretty cheap but I passed on that one because it was from a dealership obviously hiding something: no detail before listing? and some shady stories about it already having been sold but the buyer never came back.

Anyway, I had a bee in my bonnet for another taco, I still miss my 99 access cab.

They keep popping up on CL, so I could and should have been more patient.

I know I have a tendency to overlook the most simple solutions when working on my truck so I thought I would throw an idea out there. Is the spark plug loose or leaking compression? I know they were just changed but

im not terribly familiar with toyotas, but the old trick we do is retard the timing a few degrees and get the engine hot before taking it through emissions.

This can be an easy tip:

The emissions station for FoCo is at CO14/I-25. I typically run north a few miles to the next exit and return, to get the engine & cat hot, before an emissions test.

IF you need a new head or engine for your Toy, I have bought 3 engines from this company and had great luck, no failures not problems with anything at all etc.

I used to be a little bit of a Toyota nut. I never got any Taco stuff from them only 22re's but I don't think there would be much difference.

The quote that shop gave you was SOOOOO high, don't even think about doing it!
