It was incredible for sure, also probably the bumpiest trail I've ever been on! Like driving over bowling balls the whole way.

Guessing that is because of the geology. The Sanges are well known for the Crestone Conglomerate formation - one of the best cobble conglomerates found anywhere in North America. As the rock weather, the cobbles come out and make for some rough driving. The Crestone Conglomerate is similar time deposit as the Fountain formation here on the front range (Red Rocks) as well as the Maroon Formation (Maroon Bells) and Minturn formation - all deposited from the erosion of the ancestral rockies and subsequently reshaped and pushed up into the hogback and fins etc that we see today during Laramide orogenic events that are responsible for the current rocky mountains. I think its cool that the only thing left from the ancestral rocky mountains are these interesting conglomerate formations. Allright, back to wheeling and your normally scheduled water cooler talk.

Banff (the town and the National Park), I believe is entirely in Canada and does not border the US at all. But you are getting warm in that this mountain is in a US National Park which does border Canada (and it has a sister national park in Canada just across the border).

Another hint; The mountain is visible from a visitor center but the lake is somewhat hidden until you hike a couple of miles closer.

Looking for the name of the mountain (or the name of the lake at it's base will due).

I am going with Haystack Butte - Glacier NP. I hiked out to it, but I don't remember the lake...maybe on the other side...or maybe its a different mountain. Waterton NP in the canadian side...

Back to Colo - I went ski touring very near here today (hint #1).
gratuitous shot of my jeep back when I first got it and it was driving on high heels (long shackles):

this one should help a bit more.

View is looking WSW from continental divide...into one of the more remote drainages that you can find near the front range...not many roads back there (except the one you see going down the switchbacks).

Does the road go up and over or stop near the top from both sides?

    Nope...but a pretty good guess

Road goes up and over...but then it stops down in the drainage at a dead end.
