It was incredible for sure, also probably the bumpiest trail I've ever been on! Like driving over bowling balls the whole way.

Sorry for the delay. Been working way to much lately. Anyhow, here is a photo (not in Colorado but still in the Rockies).

Banff (the town and the National Park), I believe is entirely in Canada and does not border the US at all. But you are getting warm in that this mountain is in a US National Park which does border Canada (and it has a sister national park in Canada just across the border).
Another hint; The mountain is visible from a visitor center but the lake is somewhat hidden until you hike a couple of miles closer.
Looking for the name of the mountain (or the name of the lake at it's base will due).

I am going with Haystack Butte - Glacier NP. I hiked out to it, but I don't remember the lake...maybe on the other side...or maybe its a different mountain. Waterton NP in the canadian side...

Back to Colo - I went ski touring very near here today (hint #1).
gratuitous shot of my jeep back when I first got it and it was driving on high heels (long shackles):
this one should help a bit more.

I have no clue where this is but that is a great pic. of your CJ!
View is looking WSW from continental divide...into one of the more remote drainages that you can find near the front range...not many roads back there (except the one you see going down the switchbacks).

Does the road go up and over or stop near the top from both sides?
