    Default Chinn's Lake....well almost

Ran up to Chinn's lake or at least to the first set of campsites before the lakes and the first water crossing. Another couple weeks and the snowdrifts will be gone, or some folks winch it open I guess I was not feeling that ambitious today, the kiddos wanted to fish. Fall River Res. route is open too. Took my neighbor Carl (Aidan calls him orange Jeep Carl ) and both my son and daughter this time. Man do I love where I live!!

Here are pics from 6/20 going to my friends house down on Rainbow Rd. in the 1982 Jeep J-20, this made me want to run up to Chinn's today.

Been a while since I've been up to Chinn's or Fall River Res. Have they developed a lot more of the area for housing etc? It seems like every time I went up there was less and less trail and more houses.

Jim, yes there is a new guy building a home right before the Chinn's/F.R.R. intersection, and new owners of many parcels of land have rocked off and signed there property, where folks have been trespass camping/parking for decades. Rainbow Rd. is zoned for residential and the sub-division is called Loch Lomond Highlands. Still a trail, just has mostly private property adjacent to the road on each side. Years ago a guy told me he was going to block the road, I told him it is a forest service numbered trail, good luck. I then told him how I steward the area because I am a local resident and did he want to block folks like me? He saw my point and I showed him the maps, mind you he owned property but did not know what surrounded his property?!? I understand where he is coming from though, a lot of folks just don't see the difference between public and private in the mountains, they are up to see the mountains and trails, lakes, etc. and some property owners are of the NIMBY mentality. I am glad there is going to be another full time resident over there to help patrol after the weekend, we always find smoldering campfires. But a big heads up to all about the signage and rocks at various sites along the road, it is legitimate, please respect it.

Crazy! I will have to have you help me navigate where is private and where is not! I do love that area, can't believe people just leave fires burning.

I have only found 3 full on fires at campsites, 2 at Loch Lomond and one at Fall River Res., but have found too numerous all over (Yankee, Apex, Cumberland Gulch etc.) that were supposedly out, I am sure most of those folks thought they had extinguished them but not 100%, this is coming from 25 years of recreating and 14 years of living up here.

Another heads up too, there are hundreds of old rusty nails all over up top at those campsites, and basically in the middle of the trail/road because of snow drift campers(that is what I have dubbed them), camping out in the road essentially with a fire ring. I am going to borrow my buddy's magnet nail bar and go up there with a rake soon, Carl and I picked up 40? or so just behind where we stopped and would have backed over it. Carl actually saw a nail poking out of one of my new MTR lugs, just barely, but it made us look around and find a not so tire friendly scene.

Chinns is passable now. The river crossing just below the lower lake still has snow but a little momentum and some cautious throttle and I got through. A stock Pathfinder didn't have as much luck and was blocking the trail when I came back- but he was getting pulled out by a Tundra that was parked there when I went through. I can post pics in a bit.

There are some amazing campsites up there right next to the lake(s). If I took my girls, every loose rock in the area would be tossed in the lake before we left. That's all they did the entire time we were there.

Just a heads up about camping in those sites, did you see the blown down/over trees? Just a thought for all about to camp in the high country. We have been having a lot of wind downed trees the last few years, be careful!!
Tom, I am surprised there are still any rocks to throw, my 2 try to fill the lake up too
Edit: Tom, next time do the hike up to Slater Lake. It is above Sherwin Lake, opposite of where you parked your Explorer in the last pic, on the other side of Sherwin. You can either hike up at the back of Sherwin or find the trail above where you can park on the other side. About a half mile from there and you are looking at another high country lake, and a killer waterfall. I will find my last pics from there last year and post up. Google Earth will help you see what I am talking about, totally worth the little hike up there!!!
