Default Looking May Sat 12th or 19th

Hey guys I am looking about going out either Saturday the 12th or 19th to celebrate the end of the semester. At the moment I am thinking about something in the Miller Rock area again. I had a blast at miller rock and have heard that there is a lot more stuff there then what we did so I would not be against running it again. If they are open I am also interested in the St. Vrain trails. Lefthand would also be an option.

    Middle St. Vrain

    Park Creek

    Coney Flats
    http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=15

Don't know how much time they take. Could you do more then one areas in a day or is there enough at either one to make a whole day out of it?

Here are a few other spots that looks fun but I know anything about.

    Slaugterhouse Gulch

Winding Stairs Road - hard to tell from the pics if this beyond my truck or if I could make it with smart driving and good spotting, opinions?

Sweet it would be great to get the Isuzus out again! Is slaugterhouse mostly about the mud pits or is the trail pretty good to? If you want to give that rodeo a work out Miller would be a good place for!

It's been a while since I've run Slaughterhouse but I believe the mud pits are off trail, thus illegal. Please correct me if things have changed.

it looks like most of the trails in that area connect and look pretty fun, any ideas of when they usually open, could a call to the FS give me good of idea of if that would be open by then or do they just open when they open?

Thats to bad, looked like fun in the pics that Traildamage. Defiantly don't want to go off-trail!!! The last update on Traildamage is from 2008 so a closure of that area is possible, anybody know more about it?

Would going to Miller rock or Slaughterhouse be a defining factor in you coming Chase, I think you would really enjoy Miller Rock but if it is to far for you it may sway the choice of the run.

Thanks Chase, yes it's still off trail as I knew it was in the past. I'll do Slaughterhouse if others want to.

Well now we have a divide!!!! I really like Miller rock but I guess we will have to see what everybody else wants. Anyone who know the other parts of miller and know my rig, Scrat (cough cough), how much of the other part of miller could my trooper do. I don't want to get there and slow everybody down, if the rest of miller is beyond my trooper I would rather do Slaughterhouse then.

The one spur on Miller is pretty rough and has a major obstacle. We named it "Twist and Shout". It may take a winch for some too get back up it but you could do it - just make sure somebody on the trip has a winch.
There's a creek at the bottom and at the right time of spring can be very deep. It's optional. Just across the creek is essentially the end of the trail.

Slaughterhouse can be a fun trail. They have smoothed it out but still ok. The mudpits are closed.

According to Trail Damage, Winding Stairs is permanently closed.....(the good part)

Not sure if Middle St. Vrain, Coney Flats, or Miller Rock are open. Slaughterhouse should be open year round (I think)

FYI, Slaughterhouse is definitely an easier trail than Miller Rock. There is a more difficult area towards the bottom of the loop that is almost a playground type area, which would be where the "5" rating comes from. There are some challenging lines but nothing extreme, and there are some lines that a stock vehicle would make it. Just about the whole rest of the trail is the "3" rating. Miller Rock (I have not been on) looks to be a step up in difficulty. Unfortunatley I can't make either of those dates. :(

I have been looking at old pics on here of Slaughterhouse and it looks pretty fun, I think for this run we will plan on Running Slaughterhouse. Now I guess date wise, as long as my new hubs come in early next week I should be good for either date. Switching out my hubs "should" be an easy job. Do either of these dates work better for anybody, or if neither do I am game for the next Saturday if it works better, but the 12th is the earliest I can go.

i just found out that there is a concert my wife wants to go to on the 19th so will need to be the 12th or 26th. I will plan on the 12th unless anyone has a good reason for delaying to the 26th.

According to Trail Damage, Winding Stairs is permanently closed.

Has been for years. It was closed in 1998 when I did the 3rd edition to the South Platte Climber's guide, and was closed in 1990 when we started working on a lot of new routes on rocks in that same area. I vaguely remember running it years and years ago when it was open. If I remember it right, it ended up at one of the first turn outs as you are driving up Mt Herman Road from the east side. The Winding Stairs road, FS 323, I believe, dead ends at what rock climbers call Scorpio Dome, the big rock on the right (valley side) and you are on the short north side of the dome when the road ends. The way it stands right now, Winding Stairs is now simply a hiking trail starting or finishing at the dome and pretty much follows the old 4x road.

Been a little too long to remember accurately, but that whole area, FS 323/324, etc, has many, many spur roads and shortcuts, both legal and unposted, and is worth a days exploring around. None are especially hard as I have taken everything from Honda Civics and Volvos to set up rigs on them. No guesses what vehicles were happiest...Lotsa cool camp places, especially on a lot of the spur roads as most dead end on ridgetops with sweet views and campsites. Water is scarce, though, and both North and South Monument Creek have some decent trout fishing in the beaver ponds. Quite a few bears in the valleys, and a few mountain lions and other cats around, so watch food storage if you camp.
