S.U.V tent

I was wondering if anyone has used there SUV cargo area as a sleeping area/ camper type setup. i am blessed with my rodeo because i have a tail gate that folds down, that ads about 2 feet of space. i was just wondering if anyone had some cool ideas, and tips.
my one complaint is trying to keep the damn thing heated! i have a large propane heater and a couple of small ones but nothing seems to work. should i cover the windows?... that is the only thing that i see helping.

I just wanted to see if you guys had some cool ideas!

Here is what I did, took out the rear seats, built a storage/sleeping platform. It worked pretty well, and I was able to close up the tailgate and window. Keep in mind my fiberglass shell was off to build this, and then went back on.

hey Squishee i will get some pics of mine tomorrow but all i can say is dont sleep on the corrugated floor....even on top of carpet ...i tried it and its not fun .....get something flat if you have to to sleep on

I would love some pics, i hear ya on the floor issue. i have a good amount of rubber on top of it, you can even tell its there.

Here is what I have done for many years: Get the biggest bag that Wally World has and use that as an overbag over a decent 3 season "good bag". No need to get a high dollar good bag rated for winter use. This works great for car camping, but you wouldn't want to carry it. These are usually so cheap that you don't have to worry too much about the care and feeding of them..

What everyone has said about the flat wood flooring. It acts as an insulator as well. Raised off of the metal like Jon built, you have a dead air space underneath which also helps.

Heat up some water and throw it in a plastic bottle. Toss this into you bag before you get into it. You would be surprised how warm it gets the bag. Wear a balaclava style hat also and stick on a pair of dry socks.

Don't shut the windows with a stove of any kind going. You probably won't wake up....

Bruce(EldoradoFJ60) camps out of his rig, you may want to pm him about his set up. But Pete's suggestion is spot on, both bag and O2, they have heaters that sense oxygen depletion, but I would always leave a window cracked if using propane!!!

I use roof top tents , and to keep them warm i used 12volt eletric blankets on the mattress, or use an extra battery-seperate from truck power a small invertor rates @ 300watts an use a 115 volt eletric blanket . I don't use any other heater just because your bodies condensate and the gas heaters also produce some moisture wich creates a colder enviroment.. PLUS like brody said -for some strange reason we need O2 -who knew

Sorry i almost forgot even if i don't use the tent and sleep on top ,i use the anti-fatiage mats they interlock easy to stack or get a heavy floor mat-i have used both not to many issues

Thanks for the reminder on these handy units, Ed! We have used these cut into the floor shape of different tents when we have done extended trips, too. Since the come in different colors, you can mix and match so that they assemble like a simple puzzle..

WOW i never thought of the outdoor leveling logs AWESOME!!!!!! i have used loose fitted spiderweb straps then crawled under it so i would not fall off. Kind of gives you a hug all night

I have used hammocks too -i think they are comfortable ,i attach them to my truck and trailer hopefully this will help.
