Default Mt. Herman snow run 2/4/12

Me and the MS. went up to have some fun playing in the snow yesterday. while there was quite a bit of snow the conditions weren't all that great. There was a sheet of ice under all the new snow, all the way up the mountain. Going up wasn't a big deal but by the time we were coming back down and some other rigs had been packing down the snow. It was getting very slick and was time to get down! On the way down we found a candidate for the darwin awards, there was a guy towards the bottom in a new 2WD minivan spinning and trying to go up in this mess. I told him he'd better turn around before going any further. I don't think he was listening though. The 4Runner did great was able to move around at will. I did manage to find a rock sticking out that was hidden by the snow. That eventually led to a bead popping, no biggie put a strap on the tire and added some air and it reseated itself. I stopped to help some kids who had gotten sideways and they couldn't believe that I was wasn't locked or had chains on. I had to explain to one of them that keeping your lockers on while sliding down the hill is a bad idea. As soon as he turned them off he was able to right himself.

We were moving along just fine in this...

    until this...

once back on we continued on a bit...

Dog was having a great time...

I have a habit of passing these kinds of signs...

CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT STORM!

Right on! The missing link would be a green DI then...

Mt Herman is a bit different in the snow, I have to say. I am not sure whether I would have opted to go down it and probably would have gone Rampart to Woodland and back. Hell, I even do that in the summer, mainly because I have been in two accidents on it from people racing up it in the summer time. One of them resulted in a exciting plunge off the road down into the trees thing...not my rig and I wasn't driving, bit it was entertaining all the same. The other guy didn't stop either....We only went about 40-50 down the hill before we cratered into a tree that stopped us, but it sure made for a long day...especially after rock climbing very hard all day...We got more dinged up from the crash and burn than from three days of rock climbing, too...Nothing that didn't stitch up while we were waiting on some help. Gave us something to do...

ah ha! I think you nailed it there Aaron! lol.

holy hell pete I've thought that it would be a bad day going off the edge there. Since Mt. Herman is basically my back yard I've learned how/when to go up there. in the summer if it's a weekend forget about it. if it's a weekday it's usually pretty good. I'll usually always go slower down the monument side as that is where most of the tight blind switch backs are. I was amazed at the amount of traffic on sat. but it didn't start until about 1 which is when I figured we should be getting back to avoid the crowds anyways.

Luckily we were in the trees and missed the great ride down the open slope. We still went about 40-50 feet before we hit a tree big enough to stop us. Entertaining...

There was someone a number of years ago that actually rode the open slope most of the way into the valley without rolling whatever he was driving. I have no idea how he did it, but I bet he didn't forget about it....
