Default RECOVERY: Joining recovery straps, best practices

I came across the following thread at JeepForum.com. It discusses options for joining two "loop style" recovery straps together. In the thread is a PDF document, referenced in the second link here, that is a nice, quick what's good what's not so good set of choices.

You can also basket 2 straps for joining together without the use of anything but the straps. the bad news is a 30' strap only gets you 15' in this method. However they will never bind, and when broke threes no projectiles.

You can slip the opposing ends over each other and will then form a long strap with no connections in between.

When using a strap, it is best to have the proper length strap. Sometimes that is not possible and more length is needed. Joining two straps together at their loops is safe but when the two loops tighten together it is almost impossible to get them apart. Some people, including myself, have used shackles to join the loops of the straps together. Using shackles is not the best way to join two straps because, in the highly unlikely event a strap might break, the shackle might go flying.

A safe way to join straps together, and one that will come apart easily, is to place a rolled up towel or other cloth item between the loops before they tighten. If something breaks, the towel will fall to the ground instead of becoming a projectile.
