    Default Chinaman Gulch 10/22

My dad just finished his Suzuki build-up so I met him and my mom for a run of Chinaman Gulch. It was my fifth time doing the trail. The Zuki is open/open but geared pretty low. He needed a fair amount of spotting and some rock-stacking but made it through the trail just fine! I'll post up here next time I go, but this was a last-minute run and my dad was a little nervous to hold up others. He did great!

I haven't been down there for several years. I hear the v-notch obstacle is no more.

Well, the v-notch is not what is used to be. The big rock on the driver's side is pushed over further (or it seems that way) so in theory you can scoot around the actual notch. You still have the option of running the high right side if you want some flex pictures. Someone had filled in most of the notch with rocks and logs before we got there (see picture). That was not us who did all the trail work at the v-notch, but it can still be a fun obstacle given the right line.

Right you are. A few years ago, someone had removed the pointed rock that everyone had to wiggle around, making the V notch an obstacle. We ran it sometime after that and I had gone through the 'obstacle' before I realized it. I actually got out and looked to make sure it was the same thing that people had trouble on the time before. Since then it looks like the passenger side has been chewed out to the point where it could be an obstacle again, but when we did it, that part was almost level and hadn't been filled in.

Fun trail, with or without that obstacle.

A really good trail. Only a couple of tricky spots that cannot be avoided and just about all the 'hard' obstacles are optional. Lots of footage on YouTube of all sorts of rigs on it, so it is worthwhile to look at some videos before you go to see what can and can't be done with your rig. Pretty much a year round trail, too, although a big snow dump makes simply getting to the trailhead a challenge. We got stuck there a few years ago with a bunch of rigs. No one thought the 'getting to' was going to be an issue, so we didn't space the winches out very well. We were there for hours trying to get everyone dug out and back to the main road, where we then turned around and ran China Wall. Snow is something to keep in mind for that reason, plus the return loop on the trail is uphill a lot of the way and on the north side, making it icy.

It is also interesting as there are usually people doing Carnage and you can easily see the start of it as the two trail diverge at the entrance. You can drive to the top of Carnage and watch people do the rather entertaining exit. Carnage is one of the harder trails in the state and you see everything from very set up buggies to people who have absolutely no business being on the trail running it.

Might. I was thinking of trying this sometime this month. Gotta see what the $$ situation is. It is nice to drive down there when there isn't so much snow on the main roads, especially through South Park.

It is a great trail. The v-notch was one obstacle the wasn't optional and if not done correct it would get you. What's said above it's pretty much been raked over.
Here's a guy that was in front of me on the trail the last time I did it on the v-notch.
Oddly his screen name on Co4x4 is "Broke Again".

Sure doesn't take very much sometimes, does it? That big rock on the left side of the picture, the one you used to have to avoid and what made the 'obstacle' hard, has been completely removed. I remember doing the trail and telling a friend in a less setup rig that there was one more obstacle to go. Blew right past it, had to stop, walk back and look to make sure I was in the right place.

Those are quite surprising vehicles, with quite alot of abilities. I am impressed with them every time I see them. Here is a couple of pictures of a Suzuki Sidekick that has seen alot of work. I don't remember where I got the pictures.
