We went back to the Central City area today, and it was awesome. We went there the most sceneic way possible, and IMO the best way to get to the cemeteries:
32nd avenue West out of Denver, past Coors through Golden to a right (North) on Washington St. Follow that out to Hwy 93, make a right (north) and get in the left lane. Make a left (west) shortly at a traffic light on Golden Gate Canyon Blvd, there are huge signs for Golden Gate Canyon State Park there. Take GGCB to the State Park where it becomes 46, and continue along to 119. Turn left (south) on 119, and make a sharp right turn (the 2nd pic is the sign at the turn looking back up at it from Apex Valley Rd) onto Apex Valley Road, and a left (south) on Upper Apex Road. Follow that to the cemeteries, they'll be all around you when you get there.
These are just dirt roads, but we found some fun little muddy spurs behind the Knights of Pythias that we shared with an ATV, and drove to the Columbine campground (closed) and stopped at the Pickle Gulch campground off 119 (also closed) and found a fresh mountain lion kill about 10' from where we parked for lunch along the Pickle Gulch Road (see photos). There was a lot of snow on some of the roads, some have been plowed, some that are in full sun were clear. It was a fun drive, not much of a 4x4 trip but there was a section of the road to the Columbine Campground that was very slippery, I was turning right and sliding left for about 100'. Great day!!
