Default Eagle Rock and Saran Wrap June 4th 2011

So Loren (hotchef1818) and I decided to do something a bit dried and less snow filled. We wanted to do something with a bit of challenge and Eagle Rock seemed to fit the bill rather nicely. It would have been nice to have a few more people, but we had plenty of fun.

This was the first real outting that Loren had after his rig spent a bunch of time off its feet swapping axles, brakes, suspension and some other stuff. A "find out what the issues are" trip. Luckily the issues we found were pretty minimal.

I didn't get many pictures since I was doing double duty spotting and picture taking, but got a decent amount of video of Loren. He had his GoPro running, so I'm sure he has plenty of me too.

Eagle Rock is pretty much dry (except for the VERY large puddle at the turnoff a good 2-3 feet deep). Dusty was the name of the game today. I had only done it with a bunch of snow and ice, so it was fun doing it with rocks and dust. The first 1/4 of the trail is a decent challenge, with lots of chunky hills, flexy bits, and a lot of places to hang up the undercarriage. We managed to get through it fine with no damage beyond a slightly tweaked handle on Loren's powertank (dang....where did that tree come from?). Once you get about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way up the trail it flattens out quite a bit and gets easier. Still a really neat area though, but it goes by quickly. There was a fun steep bit at the end that gets you back down to the main road.

Saran Wrap starts at the same place where Eagle Rock does, and not having had enough, we decided to go run it too. For some reason I thought it was an easier trail then Eagle Rock, but it turned out to be pleasantly challenging. Lots of very flexy parts, off camber bits, tight spots and a bunch of general rock crawling. The end bit has a fun section that you can go "the high road or the low road" both of which were fun, but the low road was IMHO the most challenging and fun section of the day. We tried both the high and low bit, which was fun too. We were having too much fun to get much in the way of pictures and video, but I did get a bit at the top of the "low road" section.

I'm still working on getting the video edited and uploaded, but here are some pictures...

Not much, but its enough to placate the picture whores .

    Video will be up soonish.

Nice report, Josh, but you're right, we need more!

hahaa....you'll have to wait for video then. I took 6 pictures, one didn't come out, and the other two that I didn't post were nearly identical to one of the ones I did. I can post the pictures more then once if that will do it for you. Feel free to post a "this thread is worthless even though it has pictures" icon if you want .

We really didn't stop much, and were too busy having fun to think about it much. Guess it happens when there is only two people on the trip.

I hope he gave you that jack, because I honestly have no idea when I'd be able to meet up to grab it!

I have plenty of cheater bars though for anyone who would like one.

I will neither confirm nor deny the transfer of said jack to my person .

He did forget both the cheater bar I brought and his impact wrench that I kept in my toolbox though.

Sounds like Josh and Loren did just what we do when we go climbing or wheeling with a small capable group: you just climb or wheel and seldom take pictures...One of the reasons I don't have a huge amount of climbing pictures. We go out to climb, not take photos. If we are doing an "El Cap" day (3,000 or more feet of climbing in a day), you simply do not have to stop, smell the roses and take pretty pictures..

Thanks for the report! .....Even if there are only a couple of pictures..

    Those are good pics though!
I definitely want to get down and run those trails this season. I've not done them yet.

I still maintain that if you want more pictures then you should have come along.

Anyways, here is the video I put together. Its 99% Loren and his Jeep, with a random Tacoma Truggy thrown in for fun.

I had a great time overall, considering it didn't even feel like I was driving my own vehicle. I the weeks prior I had installed springs, bumper and winch(alot more front end weight), diff covers, 8.8 rear axle with an aussie, beadlocks, bfg krawlers, my rear aftermarket contol arms, bfg crawlers blue label, largely upgraded front brakes and discs on the 8.8. It was a lot to get used to quick. Way to much dust to clean out of the jeep today, but hey it's colorado. Realized I definately have a need for a front locker and even bigger steering. No carnage to report, except the powertank got rammed into a tree when I was off camber on poser rock, just got the handle and the gauges all twisted around.

As Josh said Eagle Rock was fun for the first 1/3 but became very mild quickly ending with a rocky decent. Saran Wrap was much more entertaining and much shorter. I still have a lot to learn as far as wheeling in Colorado goes but I think I did a decent job yesterday. A little more wheelbase would have made things smoother and would have allowed me thru the one area that I ended up bypassing. Most of my wheeling experience is in the mud of North Carolina. And this is only the 3rd time I have had the jeep out wheeling since I used to wheel the scout. I'm definately ready for more.

I don't have some of the video I shot because while I was learning how to use the software for the gopro I deleted a couple scenes. I'm gonna post the full videos on youtube and link them until I have time to edit. It's a lot of POV from my front bumper, watching the back of Josh's truck. I'm gonna pick up the lcd screen for it soon so I can shoot some better video. Also I you wanna watch them on YOUTUBE please lower your volume, it picked up a ton of noise from my springs and is really annoying.
