killed my rig
i hit a small deer on I70 right before Bunker Hill in Kansas. it took my bumper clean off and bent my radiator. it stopped me in a heart beat and happened at 2 am in darkness. i can imagine what it would do to a car
i sat for 5.5 hrs on side of hwy waiting for tow truck to show up with a rental truck. they came up from Wichita.

Deer can really ruin your day.
Glad that you were driving the big rig and not a car. I endo'd and totaled my 77F150 trying to avoid 3 deers that darted out in front of me. Last time I ever avoided them, too. I don't even brake anymore if I am driving something big. Duck, yes. Brake, no.
rule #1 in truck driving is hit a deer and never swerve cus it can do more damage. im fine but defenatly a pucker factor
Well, driving any lifted rig with big tires, etc, means that your braking is going to suck and if you hit the brakes hard enough, plus swerve to avoid something, you stand a really good chance of flipping the rig. Been there a couple of times and after the truck incident, deer are on the bottom of the list for things to avoid. I have since hit a couple, both in my rig and aside from having some funkness all over the front of it, just blasted the deer right out of the way.
I mentioned ducking because a friend of mine in Michigan hit a deer and it went through her windshield. She ended up getting a concussion and a bunch of stitches from the deer kicking her in the head before she could scramble out of the car...
I don't know about the mythbusters thing (like to see how they 'tested' that...) and not too sure about being able to 'drive' over a deer (try that in a Mini Cooper and see what happens...or a Vette...) but if you have a big rig, it would probably be better to simply hit the thing, wherever the deer ends up. They really aren't all that big. A moose is a totally different animal. They are as big as horses and will probably jack up anything that tags them except for maybe a big loaded semi...
I would personally prefer not to hit the damn things and drive dark secondary roads pretty much in the center with my brights on so that I get a second or twos notice...

About 15 years ago we were driving back to Oklahoma after spending time with family in Texas for Christmas, out on the highway in the dark I hit this stretch that was painted red on both sides for a good 60 yards, then the first carcass appeared to the right side, torn in half, a few more feet up the road on the left side was the other half, ten more feet another headless carcass and a few more feet the head in the middle of the road, then a complete carcass up after a few more feet with tread up the middle of it. All of them were mule deer, never seen anything like that, the guy (I assume in a rig) must of been barreling down that stretch like a bat out of hell. After we passed I thought about it, I remember smelling something funky, but familiar coming through the vents about 20 yards before we hit that stretch, blood! We had to pull over at the next town's car wash to get rid of the smell.
If one deer did that to yours, I can only imagine what 3 did to his!
