Default Purchase out of state vehicle?

Has anyone ever purchased a vehicle from another state? Was it worth it or too much of a headache?

I'm in the market for a rust free 85-89 4runner and continually find myself searching the Craigslist ads in Arizona, California, Nevada and such. While I usually just browse, I finally found one that I'm truely interested in and I'm almost ready to pull the trigger. But being a couple of states away has me second guessing my decision.

Is it really as easy I want it to be? Fly in one way, inspect the truck, make the transaction and drive home?

I've have tons of questions that I've been asking the seller and requesting lots of pictures, but I understand I really won't know the condition of the vehicle until I can look at it myself or have someone inspect it for me.

Anyone ever been down this road??

I've also considered shipped but it may be cost prohibitive. A 4" lift and 35's only adds on to the cost of shipping.

Been there a couple of times. It is that easy. Just check with the DMV to get all the paperwork you need to transfer title to Colorado PRIOR to heading out. Makes your life alot easier.
Post up some pics of the rig!

I have sold 3 vehicles that went out of state. One to Vermont by carrier. The other to Houston by owner who flew in. The last one to New Mexico (Four Corners) by owner and wife who drove up here.

What lockers? Is it 22r or 22re? This was the last year of the 22r. Not a bad looking rig though.

Any suggestions on how to handle some kind of payment to hold the vehicle? I'd hate to but a ticket out of state and have it end up sold before I get there?
If this is the one, I'd probably be fly down there within a couple days to pick it up. I'm sure this rig will go fast.

Lockrites F/R (which is cool with me as it won't be a dedicated trail rig, decent road manners would be nice), 22RE

Paypal. You have the right to rescind. Kind of like a escrow account.

Ditto. Paypal is the only way to go with these things. Make sure there is something stated in there that it is refundable if you show up within "X" number of days and it isn't as stated. Assures you that it should be in good shape or you get a refund, and assures him that you will be there within a stated period of time or you forfeit. Everyone should be comfortable with that. I wrote similar text in a Paypal transaction, and he forfeited the $ when he decided not to come look at it and make the purchase. He admitted he made a mistake.

It's easy enough Brad, just beware of overlooking something because of time and cost invested. In other words, be as prepared to walk away as you would a local truck. As was said you can get a temp license from the state to bring it home. There are plenty of escrow services, I'm not sure PayPal would be the best.

    Google - http://www.google.com/search?q=auto+escrow+services

Edit:When I sold my cruiser the buyer flew in from Iowa and drove it home with plates from his car back home. He had no issues at all.

Donyou have emissions to concern yourself with?

Yep....if there's one thing I've learned over the years it's patience. Back in the day, I frequently bought the first or second vehicle I looked at regardless of it's condition. I often found myself saying I could fix this thing or that thing while it ended being more than I bargained for. Sure I've learned alot about the mechanicals, body and fab work along the way but I've also learned patience.

I do have to deal with emssions as I'm in Doug. county. Sellers states the rig has all emissions components and is current. It's still a gamble to me.

You could always ask for a copy of the most recent emissions, or ask for a new e test just to prove it will pass there standards. Mine and Katey fj60 came out of Arizona, and it passed there local test and actually had a stricter standard than Co when i tested it here.

    Especially for $4k.

My friend flew to Texas to buy his first car ('99 4Runner TRD supercharge package) and brought it back.
I'm pretty sure he was jaded to the fact it had purple underbody neon, 20" rims, and the supercharger.......he paid $10k for the truck and I have no idea how much for the plane ticket/gas/food/etc. I could ask him how he went about getting it here and dealing with the DMV, but I don't really talk to him anymore.

Just don't forget to run a Carfax before you agree on something. Could save you some real heartache.
