    Default Turkey Run

We have done this the last 2 years, I think with one of the 2 years resulting in a mini-Winter run. For those who are new, the homeless shelter asks for turkeys each November to feed the homeless and less fortunate. Of course the stores all have birds on special for less than $10, so this is a great time to give back a bit. The shelter also accepts ALL sorts of other donations including food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. We will likely have a car load of stuff to take again. I forget how many tens-of-thousands of birds they need, but it is mind boggling. They end up with an entire warehouse sized freezer full of them.

Are there any opinions on when we do this? I am already booked for some weekends and a weekday won't work this year. The dates I am available in November are 7th, 14th, 20th, and 21st. Thanksgiving is the 25th, so the 21st would be the last possible day in order for the turkeys to get distributed and thawed. Throw out some suggestions on what a date would be and where we should go! Also, if you want to attend, plan on getting your turkey in a week or two!

Jeff, thanks fro bringing this up again as it is a good thing to do. I will be able to hop in on this and any date will work for me. I am sure ill have clothes to spare and i can go get food as well. We could do the food run first early in the day then do an afternoon run close by? im even fine with just taking stuff to the shelter and be happy with that!

Considering the possibility of snow factor...(and the fact that I am not in to off-roading in winter), I will be glad to donate a turkey and participate in a caravan-type thing on-road, but not sure I want to do a trail run. That's just me. I'll give a turkey one way or the other. If you pick a hard trail or if it snows too much, I could just deliver a bird to one of you who lives closest to me so you can drop it off for me! And then I'll stay home all warm and comfy and wish all the best to all of you!!!

    Your friend,
The FREEZE Freak! (I'm not kidding!)

Just a thought. I am fine with just a caravan too. Maybe lunch or something afterwards. I am open to any suggestions.

    Thumbs up

I wouldn't want to stop you from doing a trail... GO FOR IT and have fun!! Those of us who don't feel so inclined (for whatver reason, like the chicken-sh$$ cold people like me) can still participate in different ways. It's the cause that counts.

I was thinking about this cause today... If you choose to do a caravan instead of a trail, we could think about inviting other folks to join in as well. Members from other clubs, neighbors who own 4x4's but don't go off-road, cars, mopeds, bicycles!!! Just strap on a bird and get in line!!! If we get enough people interested, I could ask my neighbor (a highway patrolman) to help us get police escort. Perhaps we still have time to get some flags made (with our logo, of course and the reason for the caravan). But then again... if it turns into a huge caraven, then we have to worry about the logistics of that many vehicles arriving at the destination at the same time. Does it need to be a drop-and-go situation to avoid parking headaches? Yadda, yadda, the list goes on, but I think it could still be doable, or could be planned for next year in a manner such as this.

    Just thinking out loud!!!

No problem with thinking out loud. Those are all good thoughts! We end up with a pretty good turnout each year as-is. I think the 1st year we had about 10 or 12 vehicles and likely had the same if not more last year.

Also, this is when I do our annual pantry cleaning. Anything that we won't use in the 3 months for sure, and has an expiration date in the next 6 months or so, goes to the shelter. You get the idea, put perfectly good food to use instead of throwing it out a year from now when it is spoiled.

I'd be in for a caravan and maybe for a run... Are we close to deciding on a date so I can scratch it out on the calendar.

The other option would be if we wanted to go to the Forney Museum of Transportation. Only fitting, and of course it is an indoor activity for those who prefer not to wheel in the snow! I will settle on a date in the next few days. If anyone has input on a date, let me know.

If we do an in town event here in the next couple weekends I should be okay with the truck to go and if not then I will be in the car. All depends on the 2 circumstances and the only day I have plans is for the 20th(my daughter gets to move into her Habitat for Humanities home). If I miss this for what ever reason I will still do my annual donation to Denver Rescue Mission so it is still a win win thing.

I called the Rescue Mission yesterday. On weekends, they are only open at the downtown location, which is on Lawrence. They are open from 7AM-7PM for donations. I have decided that Saturday the 20th of November will work best. I am free that weekend, and am open to doing a trail run or just something in town. Also, for those who don't have chest freezers, you can simply put a turkey in the fridge. It should start defrosting in the fridge and be ready for use by the 25th. PLEASE make sure you mark a turkey that has started defrosting so they know and don't try to re-freeze it!

SO, Saturday November 20th at 9AM. We will meet at the gas station at Pepsi Center and go from there!

Turkey's are on sale this week at Safeway. I pretty good deal, as low as $5 each if I remember right, with a minimum $10 purchase of other items. Spend $15 minimum including a turkey. Can't hardly beat that.
