JK Parking Brake adjustment mods
Admin Edit: Several of these posts originated in the "Black Bear: Red Jeep Tumble - Manual with Parking Brake" thread. They were carved off for their own thread here "JK Parking Brake adjustment mods".

Also, never rely on the parking brake on a JK. They are terrible at staying adjusted. When I had my JK with the manual, I never got out of the Jeep without shutting it off and leaving it in gear because I couldn't trust the parking brake.

You'd think the most common off-road vehicle in America would have a reliable parking brake considering those are pretty critical offroad.
Re: Black Bear: Red Jeep Tumble - Manual with Parking Brake
I don't think thereis anything inherently bad about the parking brakes, that is pretty basic vehicle tech and the Jeep brake is pretty typical, they just need to be adjusted when they loosen up. I've had to adjust mine twice, when I bought it with 30k and once since. This video shows how to adjust it at the wheels and at the adjuster, usually the adjuster needs a PB Blaster bath the day before. I think someone might miss doing this because it happens gradually and they don't realize it's loose until it's an issue, but when it's dialed in it works fine.

The problem with the JK is how fast the parking brake loosens up after you adjust it. It's a matter of weeks at most before it's out of adjustment. I had one for 7 years. I wasted a bunch of time checking and adjusting it the first year I owned it. Every single person I wheel with says the same thing. Sure, you can adjust it. But it won't last. Most people don't bother to adjust it because it's a pain in the keester and you have to do it all the time. They just assume it won't hold and deal with it.

This ^^^^
Mine (2007) goes out of adjustment very fast, always has. Some say it is due to a spring on the lever and have added a nut and bolt to take up the slack, I may try it.

I have not owned a JK, IDK if the system is the same. Interesting.
Re: Black Bear: Red Jeep Tumble - Manual with Parking Brake
The biggest problem I see from having it apart a few times is that there's not much holding the adjuster wheel in place. It rests against the lower spring but it doesn't take much to spin it. A traditional drum brake has the built in self adjuster that, when not worn out, should keep the brake adjusted properly. The JK parking brake doesn't have that and as a result, it "self adjusts" too easily.
I'm surprised it hasn't been targeted for a redesign with a TSB or even recall. But when a majority of Jeeps are automatics and only driven on the street, there haven't been enough complaints.

Supposed fix for problem.

Same solution but a different way to accomplish it.

If I could get my console out I would fix mine, but alas I have been unable to get the t-case and shifter knobs off.

A rubber strap wrench helped me get the shifter knob off in my Jeep when I needed to last time.

Pull harder. You won't break it.

Pulled as hard as I can. Several tries.
