Tech weekend in my future
Been just driving it for a while this winter. Did some skiing. At least till I blew up my knee. Now I am waiting to get surgery and thinking about this summer. Checked out the Cruiser while doing an oil change and it looks like I have a good long weekend of fixing things ahead of me.

Anti-corrosion kit is clearly installed on the Cruiser...
So Birfs/front brakes, oil pump seal, and power steering something or another.
Any interest in a tech weekend at my shop to keep me company? I will probably get it done just in time for surgery and then not drive it for 2 months and be ready to roll for some trails right at the end of summer.
Sigh. Skiing is not for the weak kneed...

Good dirty fun there Chris, the knuckles don't look too bad but the oil leaks are familiar. My son Ryan (brandtrbs on here) just did his 80 recently that looked like that. I helped him replace the high-pressure hoses and all the others in that area and he took care of the front seals himself. Oil consumption dropped significantly. He may be able to give some advice on what parts are needed before tearing into it.
Sorry to hear about the knee, crappy way to spend the Summer!

I was just going to get a full kit from Toyota to rebuild the birfs. http://cruiseroutfitters.com/specials.html With wheel bearings it's only 205. Plus pads and rotors. I am going to try 100 series pads this time and see if I can get more then 10k miles. Sheesh.
Re: Tech weekend in my future
Great post Chris! I loved the Russian car crash video! Not funny if you think about it, but if you're not thinking....:lmao:

Glad you're dealing with Kurt, great guy, great business! Even though I left the Cruiser world I still prefer to buy 4Runner parts from him. I was actually referring to the oil leaks.
And, like Jackie, thanks for the video because I just wasted an hour clicking one after another!
Re: Tech weekend in my future
Might be a dump statement but get the front crank seal and some freeze and release (CRC). I almost lost the battle with those 7 screws, its a real fun time. Lol

Re: Tech weekend in my future
Bah. Had a misfire show up after my road trip with the cruiser down to Mesa Verde. Thought maybe a bad plug, wire perhaps. Pulled the plugs, did a compression test while I was there. Compression showed 135 on 1-3 cylinders. And since cylinder 1 was the nasty plug I went forward with the plugs and wires. Mostly just hoping at that point since I saw a LOT of moisture in the cylinder with a bore-scope. Nope, misfire still there. So today I did a leak down. With the radiator cap off. Geiser of water out of the open radiator cap.
I think at this point with my knee and the rest I may be sidelined this summer. Well ****.
Re: Tech weekend in my future
I'm happy to help you with it bro, as long as it's on my day off

Thank you. Surgery is about three weeks off. And I really don't have a lot of time between then and now. I do have a full shop to do it in, it is just finding the time.
Re: Tech weekend in my future
The more I think about it the more I think I will just do a LS engine with a 4L60 swap. Collect parts all summer, do the swap in the fall. The drive train is awesome (needs heavier springs but otherwise perfect).
Re: Tech weekend in my future
I'll be subscribed to your LS swap thread if you do one. I've done the high pressure power steering hose, oil pump seal/front main seal, and knuckle rebuild on mine within the last 6 weeks or so. Add in a new radiator because I broke the coolant bypass nipple while doing the oil pump, and did the PHH while I had the coolant system drained. The radiator was an expensive oops.
I'm happy to report that so far the under side of my motor is dry with the exception of some minor rear main seepage.
Re: Tech weekend in my future
I have an LY6 engine. And it tested good today. I have a 6L90 transmission coming, should arrive today. I am hoping this month to have time at the shop to get the engine and transmission in place, then I can at my leisure do the hoses, wiring, AC and exhaust. Not certain how I want to do the guages yet. I kinda want to gut the current cluster, cut a cluster from a 2007 Chevy and swap it out, then run a BCM and wires. Maybe. Still thinking about it.
