Saturday 5/30 or Sunday 5/31
Anyone want to make a run this weekend... on the actual weekend? I finally got some plates for my Jeep and am itching to get it out in the dirt, but I gotta work during the week this week. I struggle to keep track of when trails open or become passable, and all of this covid stuff / county closures I have had an even harder time keeping track. I was hoping to lean on someone to help pick a spot, or I might just follow in the tracks of one of the other recent runs on the docket. I'm willing to go north or south... something on the order of 100 miles from Denver.
Re: Saturday 5/30 or Sunday 5/31
I'd be pretty interested in heading up to Kelly Flats. It opened last weekend, and is up the Poudre Canyon a little ways.
Re: Saturday 5/30 or Sunday 5/31
I'm interested in a run, Kelly Flats sounds cool
Re: Saturday 5/30 or Sunday 5/31
Sounds good. Either of you have a preference for saturday or sunday? Either way, how does 10am at the trailhead sound? I'll wait for some feedback, and post a planned run tonight. If I don't hear anything I'll probably default to Saturday.
Re: Saturday 5/30 or Sunday 5/31
My calendar says both days are equally good. Looking at weather forecasts, I see ~40% chance of rain with thunderstorms forecast both days during the 10am to 4pm window. If we run, 10am is a good time.
Re: Saturday 5/30 or Sunday 5/31
Both days and 10am good for me
Re: Saturday 5/30 or Sunday 5/31
I'd be down but can my jeep handle the Kelly Flats trail??? On all trails it looks tough.

Your profile says you have a Rubicon, so you'll be able to run all but one section of this trail. I can't run that section either -- you need 40s or a buggy to do the fun stuff.
The only tough section that we have to do is Heart Attack Hill, but you have tons of lines to choose on HAH and can pick your own difficulty on that one. I ran this last spring with Tom, Jim, Mike (newracer), and some others. Tom is in a 2dr JK with 33s (not a Rubicon, so no locker). Similarly, I'm in an LJ on 33s without a locker, and neither of us had any problem on the trail. Newracer chewed up the trail in his rock crawling buggy, and it was pretty cool to watch him do the gnarly notch obstacle.

I'm having a hard time finding a "trail run report" thread for our run last May on Kelly Flats, but here's the planning thread with some good information:

And the calendar entry:

I also have a 2020 Rubicon. Trailsoffroad says there is a alternate to avoid Heart Attack Hill, but I think our Jeeps can handle it. Especially with the good spotters
Re: Saturday 5/30 or Sunday 5/31
As long as we avoid the "Heart Attack" I'm fine to go. Not trying to destroy my rig this season... Would be fun to watch some other rigs go up it though if we get the chance. Plus I'd be bringing two pups so I dont wanna throw them around to much. I'm assuming someone in the group has a winch?
Re: Saturday 5/30 or Sunday 5/31
This will be my first time on Kelly Flats as well. I think we'll be leaning on Trent and Ty to lead the way. I'm on 31's with a freshly rebuilt limited slip in my green TJ... we shall see what happens.
I'll have my handheld CB as I am still waiting for parts for the mobile installation. That should work as long as it doesn't fly out of the jeep.

I haven't taken the bypass, but I've only run this trail once. The guys who ran this trail with me last year said the bypass may be in worse shape than HAH. I have no way to substantiate that claim.
Yes, I have a winch. Based on Trevor's build thread, he has a recently rebuilt winch that might be installed and ready to use as well. I think Ty also had a winch when we ran Miller Rock a few weeks ago.

The 31s might result in some scraping. I think if you stay far left on HAH, the route is easier. It's been a year since I was there, though, so maybe it is the far right side?

Thee is a bypass to HAH. Goes around to the right a couple of miles long I believe but meets up a bit over the top of HAH. I have never driven it.
Re: Saturday 5/30 or Sunday 5/31
Would just like to know what I'm getting myself into if I go. Would hate to get 50% down the trail and run into a hiccup i cant overcome. I have no problem pushing my jeep to the limit though.

Yeah, I understand. Fortunately, HAH is right at the start of the trail. You get the hard part out of the way pretty fast.
Re: Saturday 5/30 or Sunday 5/31
Aneurysm Hill I think its named.... per trailsoffroad. They seem to rate the run as a 5/10 with the bypasses. Take that for what it's worth I suppose.
The new (to me) winch is installed. Good thing too. The negative cable basically fell off the old one when I removed it. It probably would have burned up when run under any serious load.
Re: Saturday 5/30 or Sunday 5/31
As long as I have a good spotters I feel confident my rig could do it. Does anyone have any pics of HAH? Interested to see what the beast of an obstacle is all about.

I think this is our newracer user who posted this video to YouTube.
