North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
North Sand Hills, Saturday June 12-13th
Meeting place: 32677 CO-14, Walden, CO 80480
It appears on Google Maps as "Wildlife Watching in North park".
Meeting time: 2:00pm. I figure this will allow plenty of time to get there, and still plenty of time to play on the dunes before setting up camp.

Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
Probably need dune flags to run on the dunes. I'm not sure of requirements and haven't researched today, but there will be some minimum height required along with a visible flag probably.
Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
I don't believe you are required to have a flag but it's not a bad idea. I have to work this weekend in the AM but I'm going to try to make this happen, or maybe just head up for the day. Something to be aware of in North Park when camping that I haven't experience elsewhere in CO- around sunrise and dusk the biting flies come out and can be ridiculous for about an hour or so. Especially if you're near water or you're a dog.
Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
I'm going to point my rig up a steep dune and floor it. This should be entertaining.

I'll film!

You’ll be my wife’s new favorite club member. She is always asking me why I don’t have more pictures of my rig and that I need to nominate another forum member to get pics for her
Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
Is there anything we need to know about camping out there? Reservations at a campground needed or is there some dispersed camping you have in mind? I don't know the area very well.
Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
There is some great dispersed camping around the whole area, and the farther from the main areas you go the better it gets. The pit toilets are near areas you can get large trucks / trailers / RVs to so the ATV crowd uses them alot, especially on the weekends. They tend to be loud and lit up at night, and in my experience the pit toilets are gross. If you keep going north by the creek or just away from the established sites it gets quieter. State Forest State Park is nearby and has great camping too.
What day do you think you'll be spending more time at the dunes? I am not sure if I'll be able to camp yet or not, might just head up early AM for a day trip.
Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
While not at the sand flats, the dispersed camping south of Gould caught my eye last I was in the area. If I were to look for something "somewhat close" - this would be on my radar. Some pix when I visited:

Overall trip report - Day 2 has some sand activity (Paul - you're in some pictures):

Reading the report - I came across this text "We checked out a new stream crossing but it looked worse than the one we used to get to the trail. We'll backtrack to the first crossing. In the trees, ahead, was a nice looking spot to camp." That area looks to be about here: (Google Map) - though it is "across the creek" and if the water's flow'n it could be an issue crossing.
I believe where I had camp was about here: (Google Map)
Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
I'm likely also only heading up for Saturday. It's possible I'll find a hotel Saturday night and go back Sunday too but I'm not quite setup for camping yet.

I planned to go when the majority of the group would be there. Planning to camp with my older daughter Saturday night based on Saturday afternoon meetup time.
Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
Sorry Trent, didn't mean to direct that question at you specifically, I actually meant to ask Mark which day he's planning on more dune time, should have worded it differently. I am selling my trailer and my camping stuff is a pile I don't feel like organizing so I probably won't camp but LOVE the dunes, wondering which day would make a better day trip.
Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
I wasn't particularly planning on getting more dune time one day or the other, I guess it depends on how much we play in them on Saturday, then I'd figured we could hit them a bit more if we feel like it on Sunday morning before heading home.
I'm thinking probably more-so on Saturday.
Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
I’m flexible on which day too. I’m also going for the dunes not the camping.

What are you missing?
I ask because in case it's food stuff, you're welcome to mine. I'm bringing a whole pack of hot dogs when the most I'd eat is two for dinner, and I can bring extra stuff for wraps I plan for breakfast - sausage egg & cheese. If you wanted anything else to eat, you're welcome to use my propane stove, too.

He wants to sleep in his rig and work out how to stash all the stuff he carries while leaving sleeping space.
Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
Has anyone checked into fire restrictions in the area? I'm having a little trouble figuring out who has jurisdiction since the sand hills seems to sit on the border of 3 MVUM / ranger districts.
My daughter is hoping we can have a camp fire, of course.
Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
You're welcome to borrow my propane fire pit - errr... marshmallow COOKING APPLIANCE.
Re: North Sand Hills 6/12-6-13
I'm confused, I thought Trent's daughter was my marshmallow cooking appliance?
