Hey all,

So where are all the best places to go in Moab. Post some pics and videos up so that I can find the trails with that are good for me and my rig.

Show your favorites.

See the recent TOTW thread, one of my favorites. Also Elephant Hill for the variety it has and Fins & Things which is just plain old fun

I'll see if I have any pics of these.

This is what I dont want to do. I have no need to check out the belly of my rig in this fashion.

Get the Funtreks "Guide to Moab, UT Backroads and 4-Wheel Drive Trails, 2nd Edition" by Charles Wells.

http://www.funtreks.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1

One of the most interesting features of his books are that they include a "total ordering" of all of the trails in the book from easiest to hardest. This makes it easy to say somethign like, "I've run Fins & Things, what's just a bit easier/harder than that?".

Order from his website and pay the extra $5 for the spiral-bound version. These ship from Monument so they get to anywhere in the Front Range pretty quickly.

I think we need to hear from Stephanie about now. She likes Charles directions in Moab.

I can't comment on the directions as I've only been on one trail (Fins & Things) and I just put my book down and followed the group we were in.

However, I think that this is a great guide for trip planning.

I agree, I have all his books and find them helpful though I no longer agree with the trail ratings and don't rely 100% on the directions. Overall I think they are very valuable for planning a visit to an area I'm not familiar with.

I have a library in my tiny Jeep including Wells stuff. Just don't have Utah...

By the way, you guys are horrible at the pictures and videos request...

Here you go Aaron, look through Nick's video thread from China Wall. The one where he asks for critique. Somewhere you'll find my reply to Jock and a link to a huge video of Elephant Hill. IIRC it's 40-45 minutes after it loads.

Nope, I've never watched the whole thing myself. :lmao:

Was that a picture of the Potato Salad Hill?

Aaron, plus 1 on the Moab Funtreks book. We've gone out there in 2008 and stopped at the Jeep rental place as soon as we got in. Asked the guy at the counter what easy trails he would recommend we could try in the Subie and he told us to stick to the Main street (jerk). We decided to politely decline the "suggestion" and grabbed the Funtreks book. The same afternoon we got to Moab we drove up Kane Creek rd to Hurrah Pass (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=94) and towards Chicken Corners (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=95) (which we didn't do due to it getting late). Here's my webshots album to that. (http://good-times.webshots.com/album/562823232YxKXyV)

Next day we rented a Jeep and did the entry to Hey Joe Canyon (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=89) (on which the ladies chickened out when they saw the massive drop next to the road, so we opted out), then we drove out to the Secret Spire (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=227) and did a portion of that trail to Dellenbaugh Tunnel. Here's the clicky for that (http://good-times.webshots.com/album/562823231GxotTj). And some more from my friend Mike (http://good-times.webshots.com/album/562902167KAuRuF) (plus a few vids at the end).

The last day (3 day trip), armed with the experience gained with the Jeep, we decided to push our luck in the Subie again. Drove up Gemini Bridges (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=23) trail then connected and went down Long Canyon (http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=282), which made for an all day outing. Here are the pics for that. (http://good-times.webshots.com/album/562823232YxKXyV?start=24)

There, should be enough to keep you busy for a bit ;)

We were on a family oriented trip and have covered lots of ground over those three days, plus it wasn't all graded roads. Although, it wasn't as much as we wanted to do, there was plenty to see and we had a great time :thunb:

I know it doesn't look like much, but this was what I considered getting my "offroading cherry" popped :D (looked worse in person! And even though I've gone out before, this was the first time I drove in this manner). There was an eerie feeling in my stomach (and Lisa's, as she almost went into a panic attack!) as the front right dropped into the hole. I knew what I was doing, it was just a different feeling  Worst part was, it was addicting! :jiggy:

Ah, cool. Kinda looks like your avatar ;)

Btw, don't take this the wrong (or personal) way, Volcom, but that first picture reminds me of the good ol' fraze: Turn your wheels and cough :D

Hahahaha, nice!

That's one hell of a line that guy is taking down Rocker Knocker! Always fun getting a tire off of the ground 4/5/6 feet :D

When I first started coming to Moab in the late 80's (a few years before I moved here), I think I kept the film developing companies in business for many years. No digital stuff then. Funny, now that I've lived here for 20 years, almost all the (digital) pictures I have are of non traditional trails. Some trails like Pritchett could easily be done with a slightly modified Jeep (real locker maybe & a 2" lift). Wish I could share some pix, but they would not be representative of what the trails look like today. However, the views are just as stunning as they've always been and never tire of them. With few exceptions, the local trails are more difficult now, but that just adds to the fun in most cases.

I'm always up for showing anyone the trails that they might like to try but are not sure about current conditions. Depending on what trail it is, I might even tag along and share info along the way. My contact info is in the members contact info, or just pm me.

Oh yes. My lack of a sense of direction coupled with the Wells book's subjective directions make for long days of wheeling. Ask JeepersCreepers, who did part of SevenMile with me. I think I drove him nuts. Spent hours on 3D trail, that was magically incorporated into the Bartlett/Hidden Canyon/Etc trail. Too bad the signage had nothing to do with the written instructions. We were so happy to find an RV, indicating a main road.

Trails: Poison Spider...I did it after only two seasons and without many mods. Just go slow and get out and look. Anywhere in Arches is great. Keep in mind you can go from Klondike Bluffs to Tower Arch without leaving the trail, IF you go down the road from the mine into Arches (get the Wells book or look it up and you will know what I am talking about). This is a family-friendly area for all ages. I think Arches Nat Park should be required. Like Chris said, you can't beat TOTW either.

dude, rough (ballsy) line to pick in a stock jeep! your lucky you had the flex to handle that. I would have gone in with BOTH front tires at the same time instead of riding the ridge like that.

Did you see the grin on my face at the end of the vid? :D 80% of me knew what I was doing, the rest was my daring side  Plus, as Aaron said, RENTAL!! :thunb:
I did attack it a few more times, straight up and down, but unfortunately my buddy with the camera isn't a very good cameraman (I was lucky he got a video of me doing that!).
