Here is something I ran across looking for tire information for Randy. The Rover guys will love this and may have seen it before. It is a Rover on portal axles running 49" Swampers. I included his link:

and a picture:

Nice. Cool rig for sure, though a bit top heavy for my tastes. Looks like one of those Icelandic trucks made for driving on snow, so its probably not doing much in the way of Rock Crawling and the like. Gotta love a portal axle though, and all the clearance you get.

There is someone in town here who has portals on a 4Runner, but is running much smaller tires. One of those people who doesn't turn wrenches, but has the $$ to get all the bells and whistles done. Looks pretty good, but also looks like it goes to the mall more than anything else, too.

This is a rig out of England, so I would imagine it sees more deserts and mud bogs more than rocks.

Does anyone know of a local source for portals? What do they cost per axle and what is the common gear ratio?
I would love to some under my little jeep, more clearance but low center of gravity!

No Aaron! I'm talking about like a salvage yard that specializes in Volvo's, Unimogs, Swedish military vehicles ect...

You know me better than that,LOL. I'm looking for something I could rebuild or steal the whole vehicle for a cheap deal and take the axles.

ahhhh too far ahead of me lol, i was searching such as dana 60 axles and thought it was expensive til i see this site ohhhh boy i need to go back to search on 60 axles, i was thinking aobut buying jeep cherokee chief the fullsize ones is it any good cuz of different types of transfer case that wasnt popular? it does have dana 44 axles, sometimes it is cheaper to buy that already have stoudt axles then work from there

Thanks Matt!

If you find some of these rigs with the molded in hood lights, see if you can find a link to the manufacturer for the light for me. I have been looking for a long time...

Do you mean this style light pod?

I know a bunch of the rally guys use those, and they'd probably look pretty badass on the front of your rig.

Both Unimoogs and Pinzgauers have used the portal style axles for years. Wheelers have been doing portal axle swaps for quite a long time. There are both pros and cons for using them, but the main reason people go to portals is the amazing clearance under the differentials. On a stock Unimog with the standard tires, the differential clearance is something like 18". Due to the inherent design of the portal axles the suspension system built around them incorporates a large amount of flex in the actual frame of the vehicles. This is one of the reasons that you see so many pictures of either of these rigs (especially the Pinzgauer) with at least one wheel up in the air. They are pretty cool to watch wheel, too, and the friends that we have that drive the Pinzs say that that is part of the fun in owning one. Both the Pinzgauer and the Unimog have been around since 1940 or so.

Yes, the axles are quite expensive, but cheaper by far than a new DynaTrac Dana 60 RockJoc ($4,000). I don't know anything about the maintenance, but I would assume that it is fairly standard (60K) much like your regular axle maintenance. These both started out as farm/military axle applications and are pretty strong.

Here are links to both Pinzgauer and Unimog for a little history:

Thanks for the link on the lights, Josh! I moved it over to 'Builder's Sources'

With the super low gearing that the portals give you I can see how that could be a problem for anyone who wanted to drive on the highway but that got me to thinking... how cool would it be to have the portals combined with dual trannies like 4runnerfreak is working on? i think that could be the best of both worlds have all the highway gears and trail gears you'd need.

At least the Rover on the 49s looked semi functional. The Orange Rover and the Blue Yota are far in the realm of 'wannabe monster truck trailer queen waste of good money' land. Not much you can do with stuff like that except have people look at it...

Heck yeah, I was thing of something along the lines of a gear vendor. An extra overdrive and then a dual case/twin stick... It would be awesome!
