Sorry Aaron, as soon as the pics from the other run on T33 hit the site last night, I was emailing people about doing it this Sunday, but yeah it would be great if you could make it, we could caravan up to Lyons from here.

Meeting at the Diamond Shamrock on Hwy 66 in Lyons at 10AM.

A suggestion:

If you guys are going to do the plane crash trail, why don't you do Middle St Vrain when you come back down? It should be open at least to Coney Flats. It is not especially hard, but has a couple of harder sections, is really pretty because it is close to the river and is usually wide enough to get everyone though it and to let other rigs pass. The end of the 4x trail and the start of the hiking trails are very scenic and you look out into the Indian Peaks Wilderness area.

Incidentally, MSV and Coney Flats make for a killer night run..

You guys should RSVP so this thing looks like a real run... I'm the only one RSVP'd so far.

We are probably staying home getting ready for the Annual Family Road Trip which begins the following Saturday. Yesterday I even washed the entire interior of the fjc. I found juniper berries in there from LAST season.

There's a couple like Mr Unit ahh I mean DrUnit aka Rob who are in on this one who are not aware of the RVSP thing, he's been wanting to do this one again. Joe aka Bluethunder is another one who I talked to this afternoon and I just got a reply back from a member on another forum he's down for this weekend as well. So in total there's 4 FJs that will be out there.
I have been on it before, full sizes can do it, I have seen them up there before, but as it was mentioned it does get tight and you will pick up some new pin stripes. I have only run MSV half way, we ran into some nasty ice, but that was late fall of last year. I would be up for it for sure, but let's see how it goes on T-33A. Coney Flats, not sure I want to do that water crossing this time of year run off looked pretty nasty this weekend up there and I don't have my diff breathers routed up higher for water crossings yet.

I figured it out and RSVP'd seconds ago.

MSV is a fun trail, as long it's not covered in ice. The Boulder Ranger District Web site still has it listed as closed. Of course, the site has three of four West Magnolia gates listed as open, and they're not.

If we do MSV, it's easy enough to turn around and come back down it. The water crossing is likely too deep for my liking.

Fullsize vehicles would have a hard time in my opinion..... :(

I kind of missed the stock part, how stock are we talking about here? Full size sitting low to the ground and street tires may not be a good thing.

There's at least one section on MSV that I can recall would give a long wheel base stock rig some problems maybe some body damage. Short wheel bases can manuever around it.

Of the full sizes we saw on T33 they were lifted and had decent size tires on them, heck if I remember correctly one of them was a big Suburban.

I really want to do this trail, but its right in the middle of my "sleep time"... Guess it'll have to be a last minute decision based on the number of people going and how I feel... Last time I went wheeling with a big group (Eagle Rock), I got off work at 6 am and went to the trail, it took all day, and I didn't get any real sleep before work that night. Can't let that happen again.

I don't know that I would take a full size UP Coney Flats and I wouldn't want to do the water crossing in my rig, set up as it is. It would be way deep. We have seen full size with trailers camped all along the MSV trail. There is only the one obstacle that would give people a bit of trouble and that is the water/mud/rocky hole about 1/3 of the way in. Careful driving would get you through this.

Not sure about stock tires on a full size with no lift, though. staying on the rocks through that obstacle is pretty key to getting through it and the stock tires may slip around too much..Just my :2c:

Depending on how T33A goes we may try and do Middle St Vrain and that of course depends upon whether the gate is open or not. You'll be alright with your stock tires.

Brian you are looking at roughly 2-1/2hr drive to get to the meeting place so your best shot is to go straight up I25 to Boulder turnpike(Hwy36) all the way thru Boulder then go west (left)on Hwy66 til you get to the diamond shamrock gas station (on left side of road) that is just west of Longmont and before the town Of Lyons This would save you some time.

Maybe. No one had anything near your size up there. You can see where people had broke through before.

This was the last run of the year up there. It was actually closed but the Ranger, who wheels, opened the gate and let us in and then followed us out and closed the gate behind us on the way out. He is really cool.

I was on this trail on Monday and had to turn back at the rocky section at the sharp left turn about 1/2 way up (see the map),

http://www.traildamage.com/trails/t-33a_plane_crash/maps/map_medium.gif

because I couldn't get any traction with my stock Goodyear SR-As and open diffs. The trail was wet, but not muddy. I was following a guy in a Cherokee with what looked like BFG KM2s and he climbed right up. I know he had aired down and he may have had lockers.

For a newbie, this section was pretty intimidating and IMHO a spotter would be required for someone at my skill level. After turning around, I chose a bad line heading down the rocks and got the Jeep a little tippy (enough to rattle me).

Right now, I'm telling myself that I could make it on a dry day after airing down. I'd like to attempt this again on a better day with a group. Sunday sounds like the perfect opportunity.

I am really happy with the turn out this is getting, be nice to finally meet you guys, but as such it's getting large enough to make it kind of a pain to get through, there's even some concern about it being too big.

So what I think we'll do is split it up into two groups, space them out maybe 30 minutes a piece at least for T33A, like mentioned above it gets tight in there and it's a one way in and out, anyone wanting out is going to have to either move 10 rigs back or wait until we pass. I don't see this size group being an issue on MSV.

I was thinking we could do T33A and then meet as a group back at the trail head and have lunch or a snack and then hit MSV together.

Just got back home. Long day up there. MSV is closed until mid June/early July.
http://geckocycles.com/images/Sammy/T33,%20Bunce,%20Iron%20%20Clads/5-23/800/HPIM0993.JPG

Went up 202 to do the 2 climbs up there that I like and were a few big boulders crossing the trail. I got tired of waiting for them to continue so I went over them. There was no sign so I figured they just wanted to add some extra excitement to the climb.

http://geckocycles.com/images/Sammy/T33,%20Bunce,%20Iron%20%20Clads/5-23/800/HPIM1002.JPG
http://geckocycles.com/images/Sammy/T33,%20Bunce,%20Iron%20%20Clads/5-23/800/HPIM1007.JPG

So I came to the dead end after the climb and there was a well built XJ on 35's . He was lost and looking for the crash site. So I played tour guide and we did the T33 trail, Bunce and the Iron Clads loop. When trying to squeeze through the trees on the way back down from the crash site he hit his mirror. I guess it has now seen better days and then he hit a tree on the down hill side of the Clads loop somehow and broke his rear quarter window.
I told this guy about our site and he may join and he wants to come along to the OCG ride this weekend.

It was raining off and on all day up there and I had a blast on the slippery surface, blazing thorough the big mud/water holes and getting big air time on the whoops.

Thanks for the info on MSV and nice pics!

Well that's out!

I open to suggestions for the second run (I really want a second one). When we did Johnny Park last weekend it looked as though Pierson Park Road was opened, I am not completely sure but on the way out I saw fresh tracks heading up it: http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=189

This maybe an alternative, unless someone has something else in mind or I am pretty sure someone on here said Pole Hill was open: http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=188

Then of course we could do Johnny Park again: http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=103

Why don't you guys do what I did up there?
All the trails connect and it will still make for good long day and the Iron Clads have some great views especially if you get out of the car and go rock climbing.
You certainly don't need to play with the big boulders on 202A.
There are lots of camp sites still open at Camp Dick and Peaceful Valley as well as all along these trails that are free.
Make a weekend of it and enjoy.

The shear width of either of your rigs would give you some issues on the straight shots between some of the trees, but there is one section almost at the end that's straight between two trees which is followed by a sharp left through two more. Going up it was a two point turn, going back down for whatever reason it was a four point turn.

Saw another really sweet Dodge as we were leaving Johnny Park that was running it west to east that asked what club we were with. I gave him the site address maybe he'll post up and say hello.
