I don't know what thread this goes in, but what a build! My boss sent this to me and we decided that, should the world end, this would be a handy mode of transport.

I interviewed with that company about 3 years ago. At the time they were only building fullsize rigs based on Ford diesel trucks. Now they have shrunk down the basic platform to fit the Jeeps. Cool ideas, but definately a niche market.

There's a couple I met in Moab that drive one which is their remote office and hauls their FJ40 around on a trailer from MN. I can't recall their names (Mark? Please refresh me on them! Betty & ?) but it's always nice to see them each year in Moab. Nice truck and fun to see in person, if I won the lottery would probably buy one. ;)

Expedition vehicle basically. I've seen this same setup up on numerous types of Land Rovers. Hell, If I could afford one I'd buy one.

Yeah they are sweet, but way to much $$$$ I have seen a few on the road, but very few. However they just made Rubicon entirely with one! There really are great ideas on their site if you go!

Yep, yer basic 6 figure 4x4. Cool idea and certainly one of those ideas that, if you had heard a friend say was going to do, you would have done your best to talk 'em out of it. It is amazing what people come up with that sells.

Just like the FJ40 repro 'Icon' with a price tag of $60k and up. Who would have thought that would sell, much less make a living for the folks making them.

Still, if you are going to buy a 4x4 for $100k or so, why not get a Lambo that will do 140+ in 4 wheel drive? They are popular with the Koran Klub folks on the desert. And, if you were going for an expedition rig like the set up Rubi, why not buy something a little more stout with more options like a Unimog or a Tantra?

The whole "theory" behind these is that the truck body style rides smoother on-road and has less engine noise. The Mog and Pinz have a lot of engine noise as it sits between the driver and passenger. I asked the same question. The trucks were actually built for going to places such as Baja. Clearly the truck is too large for many of the roads in CO and Utah. I just don't spend enough time offroad in places that are wide open that I could even use a vehicle such as one of the trucks. The Jeep on the other hand, will get into most places that I go. Only thing is that it doesn't perform any better than my 4Runner or truck would offroad. I could put a Wildernest on my truck or a RTT on my 4Runner and have functionally something very similar. Seems like a lot of $ for something that doesn't set itself FAR apart from what can be purchased off the shelf!

Unis kick butt as far as being able to custom design them with factory add ons. I seriously don't think that you woiuld find find something that does as much with so many off the shelf offerings as a Unimog. Granted, they are big, tall, and noisy, but do they ever go.

Jarrett, my friend from High Country Performance, bought one last year and in it's lowest gear (low, then lower, then lower yet) it has almost a 4000:1 crawl ratio. No typo, either, He and his Dad timed the wheel rotation and it took a full minute for a complete revolution. Oh...and he paid $9k with a 9' Western plow on it....

I think the zombies are already here. I know for a fact that they have invaded Fairplay and Jefferson and quite a few worked for the sub contractors we had down there. Many of them worked in the stores and motels. Where the hell is Milla when we need her??

I am actually waiting for an alien invasion. Zombies, speaking from too much personal experience, are really, really mundane....

I think Jarrett told me that he had to go through three transfer cases/gear boxes/gear changes to get down that low. Until he hits that last one, he has essentially a dual case and gearing set up.

However practical or not they are for our state, I have always been crazy about the configurations that you can get them in. I hear that they drive like a bigger Pinzgauer, meaning that they always have a wheel or two in the air, feel like you are going to tip over all the time, etc, but still...

There are some really cool you tube vids out there that show these wheeling in Moab and other places and doing some neat stuff. Just google Unimog youtube and you'll get there.

Speaking of Unis and Pinzs, did anyone read about the portal axle swap this guy did on an FJ80 Cruiser? Emded up with something like 16" or better UNDER the differential and without making his rig tippy. CRAWL mag or Toyota Owners. Sweet set up...

If I get a chance and anyone is interested in seeing this, I'll copy and post it. Let me know.

I did see a read on Pirate I think regarding the 80 with portals. I think they were Volvo axles. Nice ride and lots of $!

LMAO you guys! It isn't the brain eating zombies you have to look out for DTN8R, those are slow and according to the movies, they are slow-moving and you can kill them with a shotgun shell to the head. I think Brody is talking about zombies that look like regular people, speak in sentences but they are so inane and idiotic that when they speak, your brains just leak right out your ears, making the sustanance they rely on easier to get to.

However, yes, an armored one of those would be handy wouldn't it? The only thing missing is the .50 cal mounted on the roof.

You are right...Volvo axles, but I think Volvo makes the Pinzgauer axles. Nice way to go-clearance without adding a lot of height.

The Volvo and Mog each have solid axles. Pinz's are independent front and rear. One reason the Pinz always has a wheel in the air, but it gives it a slightly better ride quality.
