View Full Version : Back with a new episode! Shifter linkage damage

Back with another episode, ran Switzerland trail today and came up on a huge drift of packed snow > 2ft deep. Made an attempt at, might've been able to do it if I took the chains off and didn't dig myself in so deep. Got myself high centered on the rear diff. Dug a little, winched a little, throttled a little... no park? Uh-oh... turned around here and headed home. Can no longer shift into park, haven't hopped under the vehicle yet to investigate. Thinking I bent some shifter linkage. So I guess I already have this weeks project figured out :wrench: :lmao:

Hopped under. I can move the shift lever off the transmission fine, even goes into park. Nothing is bent or feels loose.

Guess I'll be getting into the dash to investigate and replace my shift cable. I've read there's some plastic in play that can go bad and that's certainly what it feels like in the shift handle. Lots of "slop" going between park/reverse.

The shift lever off the trans must've been hard packed with snow and trying to shift into park crushed whatever plastic thing is in play with the trans shift lever unable to move freely... or so I think. /shrug

Well.. no clear reason behind why my shift cable went bad. I replaced it and everything is back to working order.

I hopped under the vehicle and tried adjusting the shifter cable by releasing this white bushing

No matter what I did, I couldn't get it adjusted properly. If I adjusted it such that I could shift into park, then I couldn't get down into 1st gear and vice-versa. It's like the cable shrunk? Not sure how that's possible.

Other than being dirty, the cable looked fine. There were no kinks, bends, cracks, or breaks in it anywhere.

As I started removing it though, there was quite a bit of water that leaked out of it. Probably from our Sevenmile run the other weekend.

As I was pulling the shift cable, I found a good little buildup of silt and the carpet padding was damp from the bath I took at Sevenmile.
