Jim, Jay and I met at the Hwy 34 and County Rd 43 at 3pm to run Storm Mountain. It looked like a storm was brewing but we ended up with perfect weather the whole time. The trip up was fun and pretty easy, and the final challenges (Rock hill) was a blast and much more challenging. See videos of Jim and Jay crawling up and making it look easy!

After playing at the top for a bit we headed down to check out Storm Drain, which was a nice descending trail that ended pretty quickly (looked like it was closed after the floods). Then we headed up the FR 153c, which was a nice trail that got tighter and Rockier the farther you went. It was getting dark so Jay and wife and child headed back and Jim and I kept going. It was slow going for me as the trail got tighter and tighter, but it was fun as it also got rockier and some mud puddles too. Eventually it got nasty and I hopped in Jims Jeep for the final 1/4 mile of trail that ended in a messy area with no views.

heading back we had a little day light but most of the way down was in the dark. Got down to Hwy 34 at around 9pm and aired up.

Great meeting you Jim (thanks for letting me drive the Jeep for a bit, love your rig) and another great run with Jay ;)

cant wait for the next run....

By the way Jay, that last close-up picture of you is from the video clip at the moment of impact when your rock slider smacked the rock (I remember you said something about hearing something hit) ;)

Nice - adding it to my list of trails to run.

Storm Mountain is high on my list of fun local trails. Nice views - daytime and night lights of front range cities with a mix of trail type.

Future trips I could see heading west on 153b for about 1/4 mile past the Storm Drain intersection to get to a rock outcrop for some views - but otherwise the rest of the trail 153b trail north-west of there seems more for rock climbers to access climbing spots - not much for views or interesting trail.

Pix later.

I'll try for pix tonight. I only have stills and don't have any of you on the obstacle section (sorry).

Rear springs - fine / I'm content and have no comment pro/con.

Awesome pics Jim, love the link to your site!

I need to upgrade to to a better gps system, like yours! I'll send you a PM asking for details again (we talked about it a little but can't remember the details)

Garmin GPS V for track log creation. Track gets downloaded into MapSource. That's where I get the elevation profile. Track gets massaged so I can open it with WayPoint+ where I can then save it as a Street Atlas 4 file where the maps come from.

The GPS enabled tablet, new addition this season, is only (at this time) for electronic MVUM map info.

How bad is storm Mt rd washboard on the way to the trailhead?

RockyMtRebel

Not that bad at all in my opinion.

Bad enough Matt and I didn't bother airing up at the trailhead and stayed low pressure down to the Drake/34 meet spot - AND - the ride was more enjoyed with low pressure (I'd do it again).

On the way up I was trying to ride on the wrong side of the road as there is reduced washboard.

I'd consider a partial air down at Drake for the next trip - but the washboard wasn't terrible (6 of 10 perhaps).

I agree that if you air down as soon as you hit the dirt, you'll be happier.

I think my air suspension does a good job of reducing the washboard effects so I didn't think it was that bad...
