typical to all new rigs a person acquires, i have been slewing over the available options of adding a real rear bumper to the X.

there really isnt any other mass produced options. and any others you will find are basically the same design. either way is $800+. now with this design, i really dont care for the short swing out, as you lose a lot of real estate because stuff to close to the pivot will impede the hatch from opening. also, its really just some press braked steel plate. i know people gotta eat, but damn, $800? as awesome as swipe, bolt, go sounds, i just cant do it.

they both can be bought with "modified" swing outs. they both can be bought with no swing out for less. but still!

So me being me, i do HOURS of research every night on off-road stuff. i have found a thread of a guy doing his own thing, well 2 actually.

THIS (http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/showthread.php?t=33538) thread from www.clubxterra.com is a great idea that was never fully gone through, as he decided to go a different route. but the basic foundation is excellent, and with some changes i have in mind, the result could be fantastic!

HERE (http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/showthread.php?t=37687) he has the current version. i love how/who/what/why, but i am not interested in cutting into the plastic. and i also want the added space between the hatch and swing out to allow room for stuff.

also, there is the fact that i need a hitch to tow. all the factory and aftermarket stuff goes below the bumper and out a bit to allow for the spare tire.

so i also need to integrate a hitch. i dont see the purpose of an all 3/16" rear bumper thats super heavy for no reason. i think ill keep the rear bumper, add a hitch, add tow points, and add a swing out! simple right!


HERE'S THE PLAN!!!!!!!!!

i am going to start with some 14" or so long by 4.5", 1/2" plate. these will use the 3 bolts for the factory rear bumper and extend to a 4th hole i found tonight. they will also stick through and out the bumper 3 or 4 inches for recovery points. there will also be a second piece of 1/2"x4.5" plate that goes enough to reach the 3 bolts, and matches the recovery end to make a full 1" point for my 3/4" clevis hooks. welded together of course. i believe these will be an excellent foundation to the rest of the setup. from here i plan to run some 2"x.250" square between the tow points to attach the hitch piece. the whole span will be just about flush to the bottom of the rear bumper to act as a dragging support. this will save the fragile stock bumper.

where im still floating is the swing out mount. i know that it will swing on the passenger side. pretty sure im going with 3/4" heims for the pivot cause i have them. and i like that they allow vertical adjustment. i just have not settled to the way of adding it. i was thinking of attaching a base to the outside face of the frame, and run a kicker over to the side, but inside the plastic corner. and have the top and bottom tabs stick out the corner. will look super clean. was thinking that it may work well to have it be a top tab, bottom tab, and a center of 1x2" in the middle to separate the heims. this way i can just tighten it with a bolt and locknut. simple!

I can't REALLY tell from the picture in the first link, but I would want that piece of rectangular tubing to be at the very least bolted from both sides and with thicker material too. I see bending happening with what at least some of the time is a heavy load on the end of a lever.

I do like the look of the cut plastic (but not a fan of diamond plate in this application) but it seems like some parts of the guys design don't account for the torque that the tire carrier provides as you swing it out. I'm sure its fine, but I would want to beef it up a bunch personally. Maybe a gusset or two back to the frame or something. Like I said, hard to tell from the limited pictures of how it is mounted to vehicle (they are all exterior shots).

If its a possibility it would be cool to mount the heims in double sheer (metal on both sides) since its stronger. Zero worries about those being strong enough though, and I'm sure they'll work great. Its hard to tell exactly how the heims will work, so maybe a concept drawing would help? It kind of sounds similar to a traction bar or a wristed radius arm, but that is just what my brain comes up with.

Sounds like you have it down in your head on how its gonna go together though so I say go to town on it.

I hear ya Josh. That bracke he made to fit in the plastic seems almost not enough. I was leaning towards a similar function. Have the bib piece of say 2x4 tube angle up to where the tabs will poke through. Than have a piece of 2x2 run off the front face to the frame at a 45* angle to make a triangle for better support. Then just tabs will come through the plastic. So all ill have to cut in the plastic corner is a couple slots for the tabs.

Double shear I the goal. There will be a center tab, top tab, and bottom tab. With brims between it all. With the misalign spacers, I think just 3 .250" tabs will be fine. But I do have some 5/16 as well.

Many thoughts on the clasp side of the swing is to do a similar tabs out setup. And just have a farmers hitch pin for the latch. Will be able to lock. Will be simple and easy. And to prevent vibes, I was thinking of trying an old Chevy hood latch spring. They are super strong and readily available. We will see when that portion arrives. And I I ever decide to pull the swing off, just one bolt and a hitch pin. Done.

then a bit of work. found a sweet little way to make the bolt pattern. use a piece of sturdy trace paper with a flash light in the frame. worked great.

a better plan. decided to drill holes in the inside. then upsize to a 5/8" hole. then cut the gaps.

So, now we are current to today. to not have the shackle move a ridiculous amount, i decided to add a second piece of 4.5" x .5" plate. originally i planned to add a piece all the way back into the 3 bolt location, and tie into the bolts. but, i got to thinking and decided one piece of 1/2" would suffice. so i added a 2 1/2" piece to each side, outside the bumper. they are both welded on, well mostly. this allowed me to drill the shackle hole out with a 1" holesaw. i still have to trim the corners top and bottom, but its a useable start.

both holes are in. i still need to weld the bottom edge of the 2 piece connection. then ill cut the top and bottom corners down, notch them, weld them, clean them up. then ill unbolt it all, and weld the back of the short piece. this will effectively complete the recovery points.

after this, i have a hitch to plan. today i cut the cross piece, notched it for the receiver portion, and welded in the receiver tube. this will attach to the frame with a piece of 4" x .250" plate on each side. will use the 3 bolt cluster. this way it can be removed. the receiver tube is cut into the bumper so not to hang down as an anchor. should be pretty slick once done. i just need to plan out the safety chain loops. also thinking about maybe a second set of frame ties, to the 4th bolt location. probably decide this when the main piece is together.
