VALVE STEM PROTECTION

This was happened to Paul on Wheeler: a rock sheared the top of his valve stem off on one of his Jeeps rims, taking the top and valve with it. He posted this:

After running Wheeler, the Rubicon needs a lift and better skids, maybe 38's too. I have been thinking of some kind of valve stem protection too :rolleyes:

If there is a way, I would be able :lmao: I now have extra valve stems and replaced the metal caps to the cheapy black plastic ones, 3/8" shorter now.

Would be very good idea as the heat could make your tire go ballistic.

I guess that I'm pretty lucky. I torched a lug nut off an aluminum wheel that had a tire mounted, no kaboom.

Aluminum may have displaced the heat at the center of the wheel Mike, and yes you are lucky in my book! (in the vid the heat is close to the tire/rim)edit: and a welder produces more heat than a plumbing torch

I purposefully didn't cover the welding on the tube protection for the stems for just this reason. That is a tried and true means of protecting the valve stems, for sure, and farmers have been (as well as wheelers) doing this on their tractors for a very long time for the same reasons. It does throw the balance out.

I was looking for simple "bolt on" replacement/protection.

When I was 15, I was working in a truck shop for big semi rigs/fertilizer trucks, my "summer" job for one of my dad's friends. One of the service guys decided to weld on a split rim semi wheel for some reason, with the wheel out of the safety cage. It blew up and the split rim took the top of his head off. I was about 15' away. I was a bit grim as that was the first time I had seem someone with a good portion of their head missing. The 'split' part that took him out sailed all the way across the shop until it cratered into the wall. I think that this was my first or second day on the job. Interesting start...

Holy crap! the forces that can be generated are scarey . We had a semi at the ski area unloading a new snowcat . A binder chain snagged one of the airbrake cannisters on the tractor and pulled it apart . There is a big spring inside the cannisters that is under tremendous tension.
It busted loose of its bracket , shot foreward into a full aluminum fuel tank putting a "dent " the size of a basketball, ricochede off and went another 250 yards in a high arch up over the parking lot , over the trees , across a ski run and into the timber on the other side. Luckily no one was in its path.
