View Full Version : Heather's Jeep Build
Brody
July 11th, 2011, 07:51 AM
OK, it has finally started. Heather dropped off Chris yesterday, along with her Jeep and we started the build on her rig.
The first part of the build was a simple 1 1/4" body lift with the addition of 1" motor lift blocks. We didn't take any pictures, but I am sure either Chris or Heather will post an 'after' shot soon.
Nothing too dramatic, but it did get the body a little higher which will allow for the installation of under armor and larger tires. The body lift was pretty typical and went about as well as any other body lift ever does. The only real problem was a couple of the motor mount bolts that needed a bit of 'love' to get loose.
All of the parts , including all the under carriage armor, were sourced through Rokmen, here in town. The body lift bushings were very well designed and had a 'self centering' design that allowed for the lift to be simply set in place without too much fumbling or wishing that you had three hands. Everything fit very well.
As far as the instructions go, Rokmen suggested not to use the transfer case linkage lowering brackets, but we used them anyway as it allowed for the linkage to be realigned a little better using the first set of holes. Rokmen also suggested that we remove the AC condenser and linkage in order to remove the long motor mount bolt on the driver's side, but I was able to avoid this by simply removing the entire motor mount from the engine and, with some careful(and creative) wiggling, get it out from the engine compartment in order to shorten the bolt that we needed to cut and reinstall it along with the lift block.
Another item on the instructions: On the newer Jeeps, removing the fan needs an SST to hold the fan in place while the fan nut is removed. Not having the SST and not being able to find one (I had previously looked for one when I needed to replace the water pump on the XJ). I had already decided to simply drain and remove the entire radiator in order to drill the new mounting holes for the fan shroud without removing the fan. Since we were adding the motor lift blocks in addition to the body lift, we didn't need to do this step anyway (I had stopped the removal as I figured that raising the engine would negate having to do this-we later actually took a look at the instructions and found this to be true:D), but I am mentioning this for anyone else doing this sans SST...
Anyway, all in all, a good lift kit with all the needed parts, good instructions, etc. Rokmen is a good company and worth checking out for Jeep Products.

Looking forward to some pics! I don't live far from Rokmen, so I stopped by there and picked up a set of front/rear control arms and they make a really nice product. The guys at the shop were awesome too, I mostly talked to Jeff, can't say enough good things. :thumb:

Yea that's what I figured. There must be some ingenious way to hold that booger w/o a special tool.

mmmm legs mmmmmmmm LOL
Whoa guys, you are making me nervous here. Them is my legs and, since you both have met me, you can imagine what my pasty legs look like! I don't even think LaDawn is very impressed with them....
The SST is for the large nut located (and buried) behind the serpentine belt pulley behind the fan. Nothing else is going to fit behind it. It is a classic example of some asshat engineering...
I was unable to locate anything other than the GM version of the same tool when I had to change out the water pump on the 98 Cherokee, but it turned out that that was the old school design, so I didn't need it. You can easily tell if the one you have is the newer design requiring the SST by looking directly down from the top of the fan. If there is a very large nut behind the fan where it connects to the pulley, then you have the new design. If there isn't, then you simply have to lose some skin getting the 4 NUTS (the newer design has 4 BOLTS holding the back of the fan to the coupler) off the pulley. You can get a finger (one) behind the pulley and feel what you are dealing with if you have the newer design. I am sure that you will be just as impressed as I was with that bit of clever engineering.
I have heard that you can put enough pressure on the belt to hold the pulley in place and loosen the nut. We were unable to do so.
Since we were just having to drill new locating holes (turned out with the motor lift , we didn't) in the shroud and radiator frame, I was planning on simply draining the anti freeze, disconnecting the hoses , taking off the shroud and pulling the radiator to do so, leaving the fan in place. Whether or not this would allow you to do something like change the water pump, I don't really know as some of the bolts may be hidden directly behind the pulley.
Auto Zone, O'Rielly's, etc, can probably order the Jeep SST for you easily enough, but I would certainly double check. The GM tool was under $10.

HAHA....me too. That was the hardest part of the whole lift as one bolt was really frozen (of course the one where leverage was at a real premium...) and after we finally got that loose, we had to take the whole engine mount off the engine to avoid taking the AC off.

Your little Jeep can do this. Trick is to go just fast enough to throw a bow wave, but not to suck a bunch of water into the engine compartment and into either the fan of intake. Not a big deal, and looks way more intimidating than the actual event. I would be surprised if you don't immediately want to go back through the 'lake' again as soon as you cross it. Most people do.
Thind to do is to watch a bunch of folks go across and get a really good idea of how fast they are going, watch their bow wave and get dialed in. There will be plenty of people there who have done this section to help.
You don't really need a snorkel in Colorado, but it sure looks cool, doesn't it?
I also suggested to Chris that he do a little research into after market intakes for the Jeeps as the $300 price tag plus the 20 hp gains don't always work out. On most newer Yotas, as a for instance, running an after market better flowing air cleaner in the STOCK box, nets a better increase in hp (a couple of hps..) than most 'cold air intakes'. This may be true for the jeeps, too, and is certainly worth some research and feedback for other Jeep owners. This is usually $$ better spent in other mods....like maybe a supercharger:D

I was the smallest rig that did the crossing with a 4" lift and 33" tires. It was scary to me. No modified intakes !! Your Jeep would have made the crossing but it would have been too dangerous. The danger is in getting water sucked into the engine intake and hydrolocking the engine. At coney flats let others judge if you should do the crossing. I've heard it's high but under normal circumstances you can easily do it without worry. Coney is calm - not a raging stream like in that video. Heck the guys who didn't have doors on got their floors flooded.! We had one person with us in a stock JK Rubicon who did not do the crossing.

We rolled in at 9:30 last night (did I mention we'd been driving since 1 a.m.?), and being trapped in the driver's seat of the truck at the moment I saw my Jeep...all I could immediately think of to do was honk to express my elation. Repeatedly. In our cul-de-sac. I'm sure the neighbors loved that, but if anyone's heard any stories about some of our neighbors...so Cracker (can I even call such a badass Jeep "Cracker"?) was up on the rock pile, with a lamp plugged into an extension cord for light. The other pix are from the gas station we drove to right after. I'm not sure how to intersperse words with the pix, so here they are, with a reminder at the end of what Cracker started out out as in May. The Rokmen is the only piece of equipment that we paid retail for. The rest was obtained via the FR4x4 or Craig's List. Talk about an economy build. I would've NEVER dreamed my Jeep would look like this, this year. MASSIVE special thanks, of course, to my wonderful, thoughtful, amazing husband, and of course to PETE (and LaDawn)!!!! (And Beefy, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the seats! Thanks for the trade!)

Much like my climbing shoes, her Jeep is going to be able to out perform her abilities for quite some time. Of course with my climbing shoes, they have been able to out perform my climbing abilities for about 10 years or so! Wait....I take that back. THANK YOU PETE (http://www.frontrange4x4.com/forums/member.php?103-Brody)!!! And Bill of Bill's Englewood Driveshaft (http://www.billsenglewooddriveshaft.com/)! And Rokmen (http://www.rokmen.com/)! This morning, Pete installed a beautiful (if adorably stubby) driveshaft with a double cardan and longer slip yoke, built by Bill...along with adjustable upper control arms for the rear by Rokmen (beefiness + price = couldn't resist) and Cracker drives like a DREAM!!! He drives like the day I drove him home (only without the cute). It's SO awesome. I was getting so many vibrations, from accelerating from a stop, to this metal rattlesnake sound when in the higher speeds/RPMs but off the throttle (Robert B, are you reading? It fixed it!) and they're all gone. Not that they were horrible - it just made me a little nervous, and I'm glad it's not "normal" and they're eradicated. I'm also glad we didn't go the route of the SYE - that would've entailed a lot more peripheral but necessary ($$$$$) parts/work.
Re: Matilda. I had to go back to Cracker, because as I was leaving the place where I picked up my DRT GRL plates, I saw a white TJ Rubicon - with plates that read a version of Matilda. So, I figure it's taken, and by an almost identical-looking Jeep, ha!

It's a relatively simple fix like we talked about this evening. You and Chris should just do it in the garage now that you get to park in there. PM Lynnsy (Lynusann), she just did hers all by herself. Just make sure to follow all the directions in the book or you tube vids and you'll do just fine.

Doing a rear main isn't exactly the easiest thing to do. 1. Its really messy, 2 its time consuming, 3 if you don't get it 100%, you need to redo it. Itls pretty easy to mess it up and realize you didn't seal correctly a week later after finding a bigger puddle.. I promised myself id never do a rear main by myself ever again.

February 13th, 2012, 06:06 AM
Add some Lucas Oil Stop Leak when you change the oil. You may have to add it twice, but it works. For $10 or so, you won't go wrong. Probably won't even get your hands dirty. I have used this for many years to stop rear main leaks.
After a certain point, it won't work, but it sure does the job on most leaks. I have also used this product on some pretty bad leaks. I had a leak in my rear main and this fixed it. When my clutch finally goes out and I am actually forced to pull the tranny, etc., that is when I will replace the main seal.....and that is what I advise anyone who is dealing with a leaking rear main. All the labor $$$$$ is getting to the seal. If there is nothing else wrong, then simply add the Lucas until it is absolutely necessary to dig into all the work.
Your $$, of course, but replacing a $5-7 dollar seal really adds up in the labor department, especially when you are paying someone $100 and up per hour and not having anything else done.
X2 on what Matt said. These are a real PITA to get to unless you have a hoist..
Heather
February 13th, 2012, 07:34 AM
Sweet - thank you all for the feedback! I appreciate it! I think that at this point, we'll definitely see if the anti-leak stuff works - it might be beyond that from what the mechanic was saying - but it can't hurt to try.

Yeah, with my thanks-to-parenthood really stupid vivid imagination, I had a few scenarios playing in my head...
So I got home, and not only is the U-joint fixed :wrench:...but I have a clean-ish interior, green buttons where the blue butt-warmer controls used to be, an e-brake that actually works now, and a new air intake/filter. I'd say Chris was a little bored today... :woot:
