Default Adopt a Trail Clean-Up Planning

    Hi all,

With the China Wall anniversary run set up (thanks Jackie and Chris and all who will be participating) - its time to start thinking about he Adopt a Trail clean-up. Here is the abbreviated need to know info:
    1) We sponsor (adopt) two 4wd trails near Idaho Springs: Devils Canyon and Barbour Fork and are required two clean-up runs for each trail per year (this is our first for the year - the second is generally in early Oct). We generally choose a day, split into two groups, and each group is then responsible for one trail.
    2) We meet ahead of time at the Idaho Springs ranger station at I-70 and hwy 103 for a briefing with the FS ranger and to sign some waiver release paperwork.
    3) We go the the separate trails and pick-up trash (mostly shooting debris) - generally its about 5hour day with the ranger meeting etc.
    4) Devils Canyon is a very easy 4wd trail - suitable for any stock 4wd. Barbour Fork is a bit more challenging - maybe moderate? - but generally still suitable for most stock rigs (except maybe the lowest slung of those) with an experienced driver.

More specific details as what to expect, what to bring, etc to follow when we finalize the schedule.

Brandt Wobig, our coordinating USFS ranger, suggested we look to do our first clean-up run after the busy July 4th holiday. With July 4th on a Wed this year there is not an obvious long weekend - and not sure what weekend many of you would be available for clean-up as opposed to holiday plans. As weekend days seem to be the only viable option to get good turn-out, I am tentatively putting up a poll for the 3 weekends after July 4th. FWIW - I will not be around on July 7-8 and thus if one of those days is chosen, someone will need to co-ordinate with Brandt in my place. Lastly, I would like to finalize and schedule this date with Brandt middle of next week if possible.

Please vote in the poll for any and all days that would work for you - THANKS!

Voted for 21, but I'm dumb and should have checked calendar closer. Can do 15th or 22nd, but not 14 / 21.

I voted for July 14/15 but I'm pretty flexible the other weekends too. I helped last year on Devil's Canyon and would be down to do that run again.

Poll closed - looks like Sat July 14 is the day. I will contact Brandt Wobig at USFS to confirm that this works. Thanks to all who voted - hope we can get a bit of turn out.

Grant is confirming the schedule for us...the 14th should work but there is some schedule conflict that may force us to the following sat (21st). We will know soon.
Update on DC and BF from Brant this morning:

We opened Barbour Fork last Friday after cutting around 20 trees, today we plan on cleaning out Devils Canyon but I don’t expect a lot of tree removal.

Fyi, we had a small fire in Devils Canyon a couple weeks ago. Around 1/10 acre lightning strike. It was off the road a ways so you won’t even know it was there…

So here is the issue in short: According to the USFS agreement with maintaining clubs, there is supposed to be a USFS representative with each clean-up. Brant and his crew are working with another club on July 14th, and he would prefer if we could do our clean-up trip on Sat 7/21 so they can join us as well. Its not absolutely imperative, and we could do our morning safety briefing in combination with the other 4wd club, and Brant would be okay with us doing our clean-ups independently as we have done previously. Again, not his preference, but could be done if absolutely necessary.

I get the feeling that the USFS is trying to have more oversight and interaction with the adopting/maintaining clubs - and we saw this last year with the addition of 2 summer ATV positions dedicated solely to monitoring and maintaining the 4wd trails. I am inclined to work with Brant and the USFS in this case and suggest we schedule the clean-up run on July 21. What say you all?

FWIW - I will be traveling overseas starting this evening...not sure how much internet access I will have, but hope to have a bit of mobile wifi.

Flexible as well. Also think the stronger our relationship is with the FS, the better.
