    Default Brake Pads

I noticed today a bit of chirping from my front brakes. They are right at 50 k miles so I probably need new pads. I haven't done any brake work in years but it looks pretty trivial on a JK wrangler. Need to do this before running Lead King basin, Schofield and Pearl passes in mid Aug.

What I am wondering is if anyone has a preferred brand/model recommendation. (2012 Jk Wrangler) Needs to fit stock caliper.

    Thanks all.

I run Napa pads on all my vehicles and they have been great. I usually buy the middle price point or higher.

Same here, whatever the best NAPA has and I like to replace rotors rather than turn them. Not the time to save $$, IMO.

Agreed. If you haven't done brakes in a while, you will be surprised how cheap rotors are to buy now. It isn't typically worth the hassle or cost to turn them. Generally I will just check the rotors myself with my calipers, and as long as they are in spec, and no scoring, just put in pads.

Thats what I was planning on doing. Rotors are in great shape.

I like Hawk pads. LTS pads are great but i think they don't discontinued that model.

Food for thought: I often replace pads only on my car. My mechanic did pads once and checked the rotors and informed me that the rotors are way out of spec as for unevenness. They weren't out of spec for being too thin.

He said (and it makes sense to me giving it some thought) that due to the faster rotational speed and greater pad to rotor contact the outer edge of the rotor gets greater wear than as you work towards the center of the rotor (nearer to the axle). He said that when new pads are installed, the flat (parallel) piston surfaces and even / parallel pad surfaces have to then push against an angled rotor surface - contacting the inner surface before the outer surface.

I'm not saying you have to do rotors too (I went at least a couple, perhaps three) sets of front pads and never noticed any ill effect, though the info from my mechanic did open my eyes a bit.

I use NAPA Gold pads/shoes. I prefer to use organic pads (I find they grip better and pads wear more than rotor so I can replace pads a couple times before the rotors need attention).
Be sure to measure your rotors carefully (may look perfectly smooth but if they are too thin, you don't want to keep them). Sadly, it seems that most newer vehicles ship with rotors that are barely over minimum spec so it's rare to wear out a set of pads without rotors wearing to the minimum spec.

I agree with all the folks on this.
Its about a quality pad, organic the less matalic in them the better.
Checking the rotors as the new rotors are much thinner than they used to be, this is for curb weight and ride quality.
I do rotors every other pad change as they are all of $14 for my TJ.
Napa part are good parts use there mid to top teir.
