Default I know there is a story to go with this...

And I'd like to hear the story(s). LOL

Seriously though, I got this from Sean. He said it needed work, but I didn't ask. So now that I have it home, I'm looking to replace bearings and seals at the least.

So if you know, what kind of car do I order bearings for? If I need spindles, what kind of minivan do I look for at the boneyard?

    Thanks, Mike

If you can find the seals, the bearings should match. I would try to just re-pack the bearings if they are still decent. Of course the seals will likely get torn up getting it apart, so you have to at least find those.

HAHA i recognize that. oh yeah sean got that from me! LOL. Sorry I really can't help you find parts for it. It had been sitting on my property for quite sometime before sean thankfully removed it for me.

HOWEVER there is a good story that I can tell you about it. Back in 2005(?) Funrover needed to go and get his '65 Dodge pickup. It was located up in sterling at his (then) girlfriends house. So we loaded up his rover and hitched that dolly up to it and drove up there. Well his Dodge is such a fat pig that the wheels didn't fit where they are supposed to. further the fenders just barely cleared the fenders on the trailer. So being the rednecks we are, we decided that this truck is getting back to CS. We went to wally world got two more 3" ratchet straps, straped the axle from the truck down to the axle on the trailer. threw a come-along on there, and threw some straps over the tires, and headed down the road. Well... 7 1/2 hrs later we got back with the truck in one piece.

    Thanks for the response!

So I'm guessing that '65 did not have a tow hitch...or valid plates?

It was a ++ for me. I have to move a couple disabled vehicles in the near future, and I got rid of that trailer that has been sitting ever since I moved here.

Anyhow,ol' green is still in the family. I don't know how it sounds to everyone else, but the noises really resonate through my XJ. I'll have a look-see tomorrow.

Hey i'm just glad it's getting used. No sense in it just sitting and rotting away in a field.

She asked me why I didn't bring home $$$ instead (I've been hawkin stuff on craigslist to fund the '97), I didn't answer that one. I told you I was to the point of asking you to just come get the thing. Two weeks ago she would have asked me how soon you were getting here?!?! So I guess cash value is relative to the moment. LOL

I think those springs are pretty light to do much of anything with. It's very first chore was to bring home a load of manure. Stuff was dry, so not that heavy, and filling the box level with the sides had it on the bump-stops.

It does settle down and tow nicely. I think the topper did catch some wind behind the Cherokee, not a problem behind the F-100.

Nope, there was no pull bar on the front, didn't have current (or even close to) tags. It was towed out from behind a car lot with a missing freeze plug and 3 flats. LOL

    The saga continues...

I lucked out with the bearings and seals. I cleaned and repacked the side with no dust cover, and bought a cover for it. The other side I just tightened up. With the exception of measuring and cutting steel, I let it sit until this weekend.

Since I couldn't settle on a track width, I decided to make it adjustable to a point.
Off with the old, fit the new:

I thought it wasn't quite straight before. The flat plate really showed me how much the ends are bowed. Prepped to weld:

I discovered it would stand on the fenders. Nice for welding, nice for storage.

    Lets not forget those ramps:

I'll finish up the securement and make storage for the ramps. Then it's off to collect spare parts.

If you need trailer axle parts, try here: http://www.trailerpart.com/

I bought rims, hubs, and all kinds of hardware from them.

Turns out it's not wide as I thought. It took a little persuasion to get the front tires into the wells for the ride home...

    down Golden Gate Canyon...

    at night...

    after dark...

where no one could hear me...

    no one would come...

It was a pretty harrowing maiden voyage. I finished the night thinking "I'm getting too old for this ****!"

Looks like we need to straighten the main cross bar some to widen out the platform more.

Yep, I was thinking of driving wedges to straighten up the camber a bit, then adding gussets front and back. Since I have to cut all that weld to reposition the plates, I might as well stretch the width.
