This started with a question about what lockers were best.

Well, you are going to start a discussion with that question as there are so many pros and cons of lockers, spools, lockers vs posi, etc, etc. I'll answer the question coming from someone who has had a locker or spool or welded diff in the rear of every 4x4 rig he has ever had.

For a lot of trail driving and where you really need 4 wheel drive, a locker in the rear really can't be beat for traction. People say that here is street driving quality loss, but I have never noticed, not even when I switch from locked to unlocked on the road. You will have to learn how to drive differently on icy roads.

For something that sees more street than wheeling, a posi or limited slip would probably be better in the rear.

For the front, if you can afford it, any of the selectable lockers would be the ticket: ARB, OX, etc. And again, this depends on what kind of use. If you are in an area where you frequently drive on the highway or regular roads in 4 wheel drive, you DO NOT want a locking differential , like a Detroit, in the front, you will need a limited slip or posi or selectable locker. Vehicles locked front and rear really, really want to go in a straight line...One of the reasons why the selectable lockers are so popular...you have regular 4 wheel drive when you need it and with a push of a button have a locked axle.

I posted a copy of an article on lockers awhile ago. It is a great article that shows the pros and cons of everything that is available. It also has good information as to what works best, what breaks, etc. I posted this in the 4x4 tech section. Here is that link:

pirate4x4.com also has a huge Dodge/diesel section located in their 'bulletins' section under Dodge or make and model links.

You might also see what I have posted in the Dodge forum for lockers as I have been researching lockers for Chris' big Dodge as I am going to be doing that install in a couple of months. His is a gas Dodge, but the availibility of lockers is the same for both depending on what axles you have under your rig.
