    Default Rim Rocker Trail Report

    Last month my wife and I set out to complete the famous Rim Rocker. Goal was to do every mile of it entirely starting from the Montrose side. I had heard of this trail only a little bit but we figured it would be fun to do it.
    We used my 2010 Ram Power Wagon for this. I keep an old futon mattress to put in the bed of the truck for camping since I also run a Softtopper canvas top on it. Makes for a very nice and easy tent. Just dump the random gear on the ground and unroll the bed and presto! Instant bedroom. The truck runs on 35s and is armored up in every way a 3/4 ton truck can be.

    We started the trail on Thursday Sept 7th and arrived in Moab UT on Friday evening around 6pm. I did hear some people saying you could run this trail in one day but I feel if your doing that you are going entirely too fast for much of those blind turns. We did make a bet at the start that we would only see a dozen cars for the entire trip. We saw 10 in the first bit between Montrose and Nucla but after Nucla we didnt see another soul until we got to Moab so only 10 cars the whole trip. The trail itself was easy and incredibly scenic. The number of different terrains that trail crosses is truly amazing. Seemed like every hour or two the scenery was changed entirely. High desert, Aspens, Pine trees, open fields, low desert the works. We joked the only thing we didn't cross was tundra. I wouldn't say you would want to do this in a Subaru but any stock SUV with at least a little clearance can do it. Only one spot was a big ledge but I recall a bypass so there is that. Wagon still took it easily. We camped at around halfway overlooking Paradox. Took the second half the next day and for the most part was a easy scenic trail.

    When we got to Moab of course we had to run a trail even though we were in a full size Ram. Took the beast down Fins N Things because well thats what you do when in Moab right? Wheel what you brought! Probably a little too much truck for that trail but we didn't take any bypasses and handled all the obstacles easily albeit tightly. Got lots of comments for the full size out there.

    Sounds like it was a great trip! and glad the truck did well. Bet you could tackle quite a bit in that rig. Nice write up though I cant see the pictures.

    Thanks for the post Dustin!

    Nice pictures.

    That trail is on my ToDo list...

    =========

    Regarding pictures - they are forum attached photos (at least at my viewing Sat night / Sun morning @ 1:20am).

    Tom said the forum wasn't running a few days back (I was out of town).

    When I first viewed the thread / tonight - no pictures were visible and Jackie's avatar wasn't displayed. All content viewed on a refresh of the thread. There might be something up with the forum. If folks could let me know (PM) I would appreciate it.

    Try a refresh. This thread seems to have server timeout problems - likely due to the images. I'll poke about the issue later today.
