    Default Adopt-a-Trail Clean-Up Run: Sat 7/22/2023

    When: 7/22/2023 at 8:30am
Where: USFS Ranger station in Idaho Springs (I-70 and hwy 103; 101 Highway 103, Idaho Springs, CO)
    Trails:Barbour Fork and Devils Canyon
    Length: 4-5 hours

    ***
The TLDR synopsis: Closed Toed Shoes and Gloves are a must. Come dressed to work. Please arrive promptly at 8:30am for a safety meeting and don’t forget your lunch.
    ***

Here's our first clean up run of 2023. These runs are a great opportunity to get to know other members of the group a bit more than you would in a normal trail run. Lots of stops and opportunities to chat while picking up trash.

We will have a safety meeting with USFS staff at 8:30am (including volunteer waivers etc), so please be there ready to go at 8:30am or earlier. We will split into two groups - one group will run DC and one group will run BF.

A couple points from clean-up runs in the past:
Because this is a volunteer activity organized with the USFS, there are some basic safety precautions we have agreed to as part of our participation in the Adopt-a-Trail Program.

    1) Please make sure everyone is wearing close-toed shoes, gloves, and has some kind of eye protection handy (sunglasses are fine). For the type of work we are going to do, which is mostly picking up trash these are the really important ones. The main concern here is handling any broken glass or other sharp stuff we may find. Showing up with flipflops or barefoot would very likely raise some concerns at the safety meeting.

    2) Per the agreement we should also be prepared with Long Pants and Long Sleeves. I suspect this is included because these cleanups could involve dealing with downed trees, but it is unlikely we will encounter any of that on this run. I doubt anyone will have any issue if you want to wear a t-shirt, but long pants are encouraged.

    3) Please be prepared with water and food.

    4) The USFS will provide some trash bags, should have a few pairs of extra gloves and would provide hard hats if they are needed.

We generally have minimal trail maintenance to do - its mostly picking up trash and shooting debris. Gloves and closed toed shoes are a must from USFS's perspective - they have usually requested long pants and long sleeves but not necessarily enforced it for the kind of clean-up work we do, but it may be good insurance to have them with you just in case.

A little bit of news on this: Some of you may remember Brant. He was our primary contact responsible for the OHV adopt-a-trail program in this district. He has taken a new position in the forest service and his previous #2 person, Patrick, is now the new point person for the OHV programs in this area. Patrick was also out on personal business for 10 days which happened to line up with my attempts to schedule this run.... thus my emails took a little longer to get answered than normal. This combined with my own travel created a delay for scheduling this run. I apologize for that.

There is a new #2 but I can't remember their name from my phone call with Patrick. It sounded like there's a chance Patrick and his new colleague may split up and go on the run with us this year. Maybe not. Either way should be fine.

It sounded like there are no immediate needs for signage. Per the trail run planning thread it appears they did a little tree cleanup earlier in the year. Patrick seemed to be certain that the two folks who worked with him on that claimed to be affiliated with our group. He couldn't remember their names off hand..... but it sounds like that was a good 16 hours of volunteer work he wants to be sure to account for.

I think I managed to catch him right when he returned and was digging through his backlog of messages. I always find that to be hectic when it happens to me, so I'm gonna check in again with him next week to make sure there aren't any other tasks/projects that need our attention while we are up there.

Thanks for your patience everyone. I look forward to seeing you out there on the trail.

And a gracious THANK YOU for all that have responded - no matter the Yes/No/Maybe status.

A few have replied via e-mail and PM of their desire to help but simply can't this time around.

We (and the trails we sponsor) are thankful to all that will help on this cleanup run!!

A group of 8 is, in my mind, a bottom number for a good cleanup. Why - we have two trails (two sets of four) and on each trail we often split into at least two groups. Having two sets of two on each trail is good.

I agree. Although I'm sure we could figure out a way to manage with a smaller group, more hands do make for lighter work.

As we split into two main groups, one for Devils and one for Barbour, If anyone is interested/willing/able to as the point person for the 2nd group I would appreciate it if you could let me know. We always seem to sort it out at the ranger station if nobody speaks up, but a little forethought is always welcome. Feel free to reply here or DM me.... either way. I've really gotten the layout of Barbour Fork dialed in in my head.... so a lead for Devils would be preferred but I am fine either way if a helper really wants to lead barbour.

    Fantastic.

A winch isn't needed - a willing attitude to pick trash and make the forest a cleaner place is totally needed and readily available.

Sorry for the late notice, but we need to change the meetup location. There's a bike race tomorrow that will run down rt 103 and then turn up I70 toward vail. (https://www.triplebypass.org/). Patrick called me and he expects the parking area at the ranger station to be full.

Instead of the ranger station, we're going to meet the rangers at the Idaho Springs Sports and Event's complex. This is just off of exit 241. If you're coming from the east, take this exit and take the first exit on the roundabout like you are getting back on I-70E. There's a right turn once you pass the WB offramp that will take you to the sports complex.

    https://www.google.com/maps/place/Id...483r?entry=ttu

I'm going to DM everyone who's "confirmed" or "maybe" at this time. I'll include my phone number which you can call if you get turned around, or I will also have my radios scanning all of the frequencies in the trail run page. I'll make an edit to that calendar entry as well.

Pat says that Devils Canyon will need a little extra work. There will be some fire ring dismantling and some tree trimming for clearance around the trail. Sounds like he will be accompanying Tom and the rest of that group running Devils. They will have extra gloves and hard hats for anyone needing them but I would emphasize long pants and long sleeves for anyone participating in tree/brush work.... as well as closed toed shoes which should be a must have for everyone on both trails.

On Barbour its more like the typical trash run. The road up to the trailhead will have cyclists coming down into idaho springs Our typical airdown/up spot may be full. If it is we will go straight up the trail and air down at the top of the first climb.

Sorry again for the last minute change.
