both of those set-ups are pretty ideal...The 84cj7 I had for a long time had a tired 258 that just kept running, but by that time period, the emissions had sucked some of the life out of it, the model 20 was weak in the rear, the gears weren't low enough for much, and the T5 was also a bit weak. For the short nose, I have the same in the 70 (minus the headers), and added tera lows to the D18. Been debating swapping the 3speed T14 for a T18 to get more crawl...The T18 is sitting in the garage, but I just really like how original it is and that I can still pretend to keep up with Shane on his portals. Maybe we'll get to cross paths again, but I am moving out of state. I do hope to continue to wheel with some of this group a bit here and there. Hope the steering column works out for you.
Also, if you are looking for an early cj5 specific forum for information and whatnot - I highly suggest
www.earlycj5.com. Most knowledgeable site for the v6 era by far. Sometimes its a bit tricky to get an account registered, so if you have issues, shoot me a message here and I can help get you set up (I am a moderator on that site). Also, that group, which is nationwide etc, has some group runs and gatherings which are a lot of fun with essentially nothing but old cjs. There is a yearly rubcion run in July (done it twice and its absolutely the best wheeling trip I've ever done!) and a yearly Colo gathering (in Leadville this year) in early Aug. There are a couple east coast gatherings that I've never made, and usually some stuff pops up for Cali and Utah every so often. Members of this group have probably noticed I wheel locally less than I used to, and I spend more time traveling and gathering with the ecj5 group. Even if you can't away for a long trip, maybe you can join us in Leadville for a few days. Cheers!
