Default Moab trip some time this spring

After getting a taste of Moab today I am dying to pull my Jeep out there and do some fun trails! Not looking to do extreme stuff, some of my to-do’s are Lockhart Basin, Fins & Things (the entire trail this time), maybe Porcupine rim, maybe Hells revenge and a few others. I’m hoping someone else wants to make it out also as it would certainly be reassuring to travel with others. I’d love to go during the week to avoid the crowds that come on weekends but would be open to weekend also. I’m thinking minimum 2 nights & maybe up to 4 or 5 total.

I’m planning on renting a small trailer and pulling my Jeep with my Ram Power Wagon and would probably “car camp” .... would love to do Lockhart Basin over two days and camp out on and near the trails.

Anyone up for a Moab trip in April or May???

I've got a trip planned there June 8 - 12 (Monday through Friday) with another Jeeper bud, if you don't go in April or May, consider running it with us!

Will probably make a post about it 60 days out. Only 90 days to go!

I'm interested. I don't want to run Lockhart Basin again, though. We did it last fall, and while it was nice to do once, I found it to be pretty uninteresting and too big of a time investment.

Agree on Lockhart Basin - yet, I think it would be better if you planned it as an overnight. I would suggest going all the way out to the end of chicken corners, return the short distance back to the junction with Lockhart, head south up the one section that has some obstacles, and camp the night somewhere out in the middle of nowhere....The 2nd half of the drive would probably feel a lot shorter if you did it by itself, and yes, its mostly a flat, bumpy dirt road all the way out to pavement...I did enjoy the side trip to the river on Lockhard canyon.

But...if you've never really wheeled in Moab, I would prioritize a lot of other trails first with the one exception being if you are specifically looking to go overnight out in the middle of nowhere.

There is no way I can make a spring Moab trip this year...Hoping for a trip in the fall as usual. Matt - with your TJ, you can easily run most of the classics:
    Fins
Hells Revenge (choose your own adventure at the 3 biggies - or bypass)
Poison Spider (my current favorite and no bypasses required)
Elephant Hill (its a bit of a haul down to Needles - but the trail is awesome - and its another option for overnight jeep camp)
Golden Spike is next on my list...its probably slight step up in difficulty - have not run all of it but hoping to - the launching pad was a bit puckering....
I also really enjoyed Porcupine Rim even though it doesn't get much publicity, as well as Klondike Blufffs.

Definitely consider this if you want a big, long trip. It takes as long (or longer than) Lockhart Basin, but it is a much more interesting and challenging trail. Elephant Hill is awesome.

Matt: a couple buddies and I will be doing our 6th annual Moab trip this April. Leaving April 30 and setting up a base camp at a cool remote site. We will wheel for 4 days and head back to town on May 5th. You are welcome to join for all or part of the trip.
    Hit me up for details.

Thanks y’all, I’ll obviously have to see what the wife says about dates also but the wife is supposed to be gone for a few weeks on May (to Japan) so if this Corona virus doesn’t disrupt that trip then I’ll probably plan to go while she’s gone. I may “need” to get out to Moab earlier and will look at maybe doing a trip with the wife.... and just running a few day trips closer to town. It’s all up in the air right now but I’ve got Moab on my mind since I got a day of easy wheeling in yesterday and want moooooooooore!!!!!

James, I’ve seen Poison Spyder and Hell’s revenge with difficult ratings.... and I guess it scared me off a bit. I know my rig is pretty capable so maybe I should try some of the harder classics

Hell's Revenge - totally up your alley. It's a favorite of mine. I option out of the two obstacles (Hells Gate & The Escalator) and have done one of the easier hot tubs (again - totally optional). It's a nice trail. Do take the out-n-back to the Colorado river overlook.

Poison Spider was NOT as difficult as I would have imagined. It's high on my list too. You have dual lockers and 35's - you are set to make PS easy. Nice views over the Moab valley from two of the overlooks. A fun trail. I'm not daunted to run it again (well, maybe not if it's wet - but that's RARE out there).

For your Lockhart basin and camping desire. I could pass on Lockhart basin. Lockhart Canyon was a hoot - much fun. I could see taking LB down to the canyon, take the canyon to the river, then head back up the canyon and find a nice place to set camp. Overnight there - or somewhere "southish" on Lockhart Basin and do Elephant Hill the next day (you might need fuel at the Outpost that next morning). That could be a nice two-day trip.

I'm interested. I was planning on hitting Moab in a couple of weeks but plans got derailed so I'm definitely wanting to hit it sometime this season.

Agreed with others. I did it in my '03 TJ Sport on 33s. No way (for me) on the escalator or hot tub optionals, but those two trails - super fun and you'll love it!!

Ok - I guess I should check out Hells revenge!

My wife just told me she’s up for a trip out to Moab anytime. We would stay in Moab at a fancy spa or something and she would spa during the day and let me go wheeling. Who’s up for making a long weekend trip sometime in the next month or two?

Shane? Trent? Jim? Paul? Anyone?? I can probably go anytime, 2 weeks from now, late March, early April.... that’s the cool thing about owning our business

I wanna go to Moab!!! (Said like a toddler having a tantrum)

Yeah, interested in a long weekend the end of March through mid May sometime. Kids are on spring break March 23 - March 30. Maybe that's a good time except for the increasing coronavirus situation. There are still reasonably priced hotels March 26 - 30 (just picked some dates to try).

If in April, I would avoid the week of Easter Jeep Safari. EJS is April 4-12 this year. Everything is probably long-since booked for that week, and things will be very busy around town that week.

I'm interested in Hell's Revenge (bypasses for me...), Porcupine Rim, Fins, and others for day trips. Wouldn't want to try an overnight camping run if my wife and kids come with me. Would be fun to do White Rim Trail sometime, but that's a 2-day camping trip adventure that I need to do without wife and kids (the trail is about 100 miles long).

Edit -- If you haven't run Top of the World, you should put that on your list. It is awesome (my avatar photo is from the end of the trail).

I agree I want to avoid EJS and the crowds. Last weekend of March or something? I’d probably want to leave Thursday and come back Sunday. I’d be up for doing something during the week also but not sure that’s an option but if it’s Spring break then maybe make it during the week more. I’m flexible
Im serious Trent, if you wanna plan this I am ready to book lodging and reserve a trailer Those are all trails I wanna run and are close to town so we can hang with our wives (& kids in your case) in the evening ...

So arrive in Moab Thursday (March 26) evening and depart Sunday? Wheel Friday and Saturday?

    Shane?

Is that the same weekend of the anniversary run here? I don't see a calendar entry for that at the top of the page.

I'll see if the family is interested. Wife would like to do something in town and not wheel. One of my kids probably would like that as well.

I might be able to swing that weekend and I'm down for any trail. I cant say for sure yet, I'm going to Fruita next week so it might be too much time away depending on how work fills in between now and then. I'm pretty sure I'll be there April 22-26 but haven't booked anything yet, might just camp too.
