I bought the Factor 55 FID and have used it to tie several soft shackles as well as make a winch line extension. It's actually very easy.

This site has an animated view of how to make the soft shackles as well as a formula for how long of a piece to start with and where to mark for entry/exit. These are for boating, but besides the knot looking a bit different, it should work.

After making mine and pulling the knot super tight with my winch, I put thin CA glue on the knot to insure it will not come apart.
I also added nylon tubing to them to help with abrasion.
Made a couple of fids out of knitting needles. Tied my first button knot, and ordered some Amsteel Blue dyeema rope to tied a soft shackle.
Button knots are actually quite easy if one realizes they a simply a variation of a carrick bend.
oops. I guess thats a diamond knot rather than a Chinese button knot.

First self tied shackle. This is on cheap harbor freight cord not strong. I tied this because I believe Santa is bringing about 6’ of 7/16” dyeema for Christmas. Wanted practice before tying the real thing.

You're really getting into these rope loops, Tom! How many inches of rope does it take? How much in materials is one?
