    Default Gear swap shop

I'm in the planning stages to go up a tire size within the next year, and to do this right, one of the many steps I'm going to take is to re-gear. I'm planning to go with 4.88's for various reasons when I switch to 37's. And I'm fairly new to the Colorado Springs area, so I'm looking for recommendations on where to get this done. Or any Forum members do gear swaps as side work?

Oh, and I'm not building a dedicated crawler, more of an all around trail Jeep who likes to do an occasional harder trail once in a while.

    Thanks in advance.

In Colorado Springs my recommendation would be Predator 4WD.

Its been quite a lot of years since I lived C Springs, but I agree with above...Predator 4wd is probably your best option. Does Tanner 4x4 still exist? I had them do some work back in the 90s on my first cj7...they seemed okay, a bit more budget than predator, but when I found predator 4wd (and focus on cj parts back then) I never went back.

Yeah, Tanner is still around but I haven't dealt with them personally. However, I'm sure they could install gears no problem as well.

Anyone ever used Bach Crawlers in Monument/Palmer Lake? I happened to be at their shop on Friday. Seems like a cool family run business, so was just curious.

Anyone used or heard anything about SFF Customs out in Calhan for installing gears? Saw an ad for them so thought I'd ask. Hopefully make an appointment to get this done beginning of Feb. Still deciding on a shop.

You might check at Car Worx Warehouse, 403 Auburn Dr., in the Springs. 719-465-3308. Ask for Larry Hull, he's a long time 'wheeler & builder, long time member here, and as good a mechanic as you'll find anywhere. And honest as they come.

Called and talked to Car Worx. Sounds like a good place. Was quoted $600 an axle which is right in budget. Think I'll be getting them done there.

    Thanks for the recommendation.

Now someone buy my 35s in the For Sale section so I can get 2 more 37s and complete the set lol.

I will consider some trades, and may possibly take payments for the right person.

Got the gears installed at Car Worx Warehouse last week and couldn't be happier. Great group of guys. Highly recommend this shop.

What gears did you go with? What did your "out the door" cost end up being?

I bought Yukon gears when Northridge4x4 was having a sale. Got F&R 4.88s with master install kits for $500. And Car Worx was right about $1600 for the install, so right around $2100 all said and done.

Had twisted splines on one of my rear axle shafts that they caught, so replaced those too with Ten Factory chromoly's. These were in the plan to do before summer, but had to move that up obviously. Ugh. Will be eating ramen the rest of the month lol.

Have you had it at highway speeds yet? How's it do? What's the acceleration like? I was just looking at 4.88's today for mine.

Breaking in the gears, so haven't had it above 50 yet. I should be good on the break in, but I'm gonna take it easy like that for the first couple hundred. It's not my daily, so it might take another week or so. I'll report back on my initial seat of the pants impressions soon.

I'm running 4.88's with 35's and I really like the combo of gearing for wheeling and street drivability.

I've had Predator do lots of work for me, all quality, but costly.

Great to hear good things about a new shop I've never heard of (Car Worx).
Will definitely add them to the top of my 'needa mechanic' list.

Thanks for the question and the pointers you guys.

    Initial review time.

Let me start this review off by saying that I was happy with 35s and my stock 4.10s. I even towed my tiny (900lb) pop-up camper with this set-up and didn't have any complaints. The only thing I felt was lacking with this set-up was in 4-low going downhill. Even with the 4:1 I felt that I was going just a little bit too fast for my liking.

With that said, the 4.88s are awesome. I haven't been off road yet, but the acceleration from a stop, and the ability to keep speed up a hill are so much better than before even with the 37s on it now. It's only been a short time, but I feel that the 4.88s and 37s are about perfect for me. Only time will tell, but so far I think it was the right choice. Everything is a compromise though.
